Overview
The Department of Public Works is looking for a highly motivated Information Technology (IT) Technician. Under general supervision, the IT Technician will support the IT staff with desktop support and access control systems support. Duties include imaging PCs, installing software and hardware, documenting procedures, maintaining records, advising users on application software, and training users to use the IT infrastructure safely. The IT Technician will provide superior customer service with internal users and other departments, maintaining records in the card key management software.
The Department
The Department of Public Works is unique in San Mateo County for having its own internal, full-service IT unit, the Business Systems Section (BSS). BSS is a small group of IT staff responsible for a wide range of roles, from core IT functions to GIS support and access control.
Working in BSS, staff have opportunities to learn and work with many aspects of technology including desktop support, enterprise application support, server and network design / maintenance, GIS maps and spatial applications, web design and support, databases, and programming opportunities.
Ideal Candidate
- Strong desktop support, troubleshooting and break-fix skills; familiarity with helpdesk ticketing systems (Samanage, JIRA, ServiceNow, etc.) and knowledge bases (Confluence).
- Working knowledge of enterprise software platforms (Microsoft O365) and directory services (Active Directory).
- Thorough knowledge of computer software and hardware and a variety of internet applications, networking, and operating systems (Windows); ability to image Windows workstations using imaging tools (Windows ISO, Clonezilla) and deployment platforms (SCCM, MDT) to deploy and maintain computers and laptops.
- Familiarity with public sector procurement; experience purchasing software licenses, technology equipment and supplies.
- Excellent troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, and ability to quickly master new technology and applications.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to effectively communicate with diverse groups.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive information.
- Ability to work well and independently in a multi-disciplinary, fast-paced environment.
Expected hours : 8 : 00 A.M. to 5 : 00 P.M., Monday through Friday. Time may change based on organizational need. Occasional on-call duties may be required. This position will be fully on-site at 555 County Center, Redwood City, CA 94063.
Duties
Managing technology asset inventory; deploy, setup, and maintain inventory of devices (laptops, workstations, servers, peripherals); prepare decommissioned equipment for surplus pickup / storage; order equipment and supplies as required.Manage technology procurement; purchase software licenses, computers and related hardware, conference room equipment, and supplies as needed.Write user operating instructions for departmental applications and equipment; present training, documentation and other materials to user groups and individuals.Participate in departmental systems planning activities.Perform related duties as assigned.User Support
Maintain helpdesk service tickets; serve as technical resource and primary contact for departmental system users; provide desktop and end-user support in person, remotely, by telephone, or email.Troubleshoot and assist users in solving hardware and software problems; evaluate problem severity and resolve or escalate as needed.Support the department's use of audio-visual systems including laptops, TVs, and projectors; set up and provide technical support for presentations and virtual meetings (Teams, Zoom Room, etc.).Desktop Support
Install, configure, maintain, troubleshoot and upgrade department computers and peripherals; deploy and maintain computer images, drivers and software packages.Manage user accounts and profiles using Active Directory; onboard and offboard users.Perform routine system administration using end-point management software (SCCM, XDR, Tenable, etc.) per desktop security policies.Provide support for mobile devices (Apple).Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to qualify is :
Education : Possession of a high school diploma and technical certification from an accredited college in a field such as computer science, information systems, or a related area.Experience : One year of full-time experience performing information systems equipment installation, system support, and / or user support duties.Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of troubleshooting computer hardware and software problems, and the operational characteristics of hardware, software, and networking products.Understanding of job planning and prioritizing techniques.Knowledge of computer networks and systems, hardware and software products used in the department and industry.Desktop Support Focus
Install and support hardware and software used by the department (e.g., MS Windows, Microsoft O365, Outlook, Active Directory).Analyze operational and systems problems, evaluate alternatives and reach sound conclusions.Provide technical support to multiple users of broad-based applications; respond effectively to user problems and needs.Use initiative and independent judgment within procedures to support automation systems.Prepare clear, concise documentation and training materials; maintain accurate records.Organize work, set priorities, and meet deadlines.Establish and maintain effective working relationships; communicate with technical and non-technical personnel.Analyze user requirements and recommend appropriate data automation products.Physical Requirements
Stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, walk, sit, and reach daily.Communicate verbally on a daily basis.Use finger dexterity to type and handle objects; perceive attributes by touch.Occasionally lift up to 50 pounds; carry items weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis.Note : Individuals who do not meet these physical requirements due to disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
