Volunteer Fire Chief
The responsibility of the Shipshewana Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD) Fire Chief is to manage and oversee the operations and lawful requirements of the SVFD pursuant to Indiana law. This at-will position with the Town of Shipshewana operates under the administrative direction of the Town Council of the Town of Shipshewana and with the guidance of a Council SVFD liaison. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to :
- Manage all firefighting, fire prevention, rescue and emergency medical services activities.
- Manage and oversee all employees of the SVFD
- Maintains, develops and improves SOGs for the SVFD.
- Performs fiscal management and preparation of annual budgets and controls expenditures
- Evaluates needs and makes recommendations or requisitions to Council of needed new or replacement SVFD buildings, equipment, and apparatus.
- Coordinates with local departments and outside agencies
- Build and maintain membership, selecting, training and motivating personnel
- Develop and implement with input from volunteer firefighters a vision and plan for the future of the SVFD within each service area
- Manage the development and implementation of SVFD goals
- Build and maintain public relations within the community including schools
- Preside over monthly SVFD meetings
- Preside over monthly SVFD training
- Maintain all equipment to an always ready state with a weekly truck inspection policy
- Create and maintain an inspection policy for all equipment and gear with a replacement plan
- Manage the development and implementation of SVFD short term and long-term goals
- Monitor and evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery
- Maintain SVFD discipline.
- Any other duties imposed upon a Fire Chief under Indiana Code, generally found within Title 36 Local Government; Article 8- Public Safety.
- Any additional task as determined by the Council liaison or the Council.
