Primary Objective of Position

With guidance from the EHS leadership and / or Site Head, the Sr. EHS Specialist provides leadership in maintaining the facilities' environmental, industrial, health and safety programs.

This includes all site EHS activities including but not limited to : Industrial Hygiene, laboratory safety, handling and disposal of hazardous materials, emergency preparedness, site permit maintenance and regulatory recordkeeping.

Major Duties / Responsibilities

Health and Safety - 70%

  • Responsible for OSHA recordkeeping and reporting requirements. Manages site safety metrics programs and assists in the communication to various site departments as necessary.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of all company and sitewide EHS SOPs, coordinates periodic reviews, and ensures EHS related documents reflect current regulatory standards.
  • Leads the planning, development, and implementation of the site's industrial hygiene programs to include development of exposure assessments, air monitoring, noise monitoring and chemical hazard control techniques.

Provides support for effective exposure controls for new / incoming APIs. Works with operational groups to mitigate risks and implement exposure controls.

  • Performs EHS assessments of new processes and new materials.
  • Leads & coordinates the site Ergonomics programs. Performs ergonomic assessments and works with operational groups providing recommendations for modification and improvements.
  • Performs periodic safety inspections of site activities, documents findings, and works with area management to determine corrective actions in accordance with applicable EHS related regulations and company policies.

Responsible for ensuring appropriate follow-up is performed in a timely manner.

Serves as the Site Safety Committee (SSC) chairperson, promoting employee engagement and communication regarding site EHS programs and performance.

Champions efforts to identify and create opportunities for all employees to participate and engage in the site EHS program.

Manage the accident and near miss reporting program and incident investigations. Performs incident investigations to determine root cause and corrective / preventative actions.

Works with managers to develop sound implementation plans to reduce risks.

Develops and maintains required EHS training programs and provides training to employees, new hires and contractors. Works with the training department to ensure that all safety training is scheduled and documentation is properly managed.

Identify and engage external training partners, as required.

  • Provides selection criteria and authorization for purchasing safety equipment (including PPE) as well as guidance on proper use and maintenance.
  • Partners with departmental management in reviewing existing and new SOPs at a department level, ensuring proper safety requirements are met.
  • Provides guidance and support for all aspects of Laboratory Safety.
  • Coordinates OSHA required medical testing for current employees and new hires. Ensures appropriate follow-up is provided in a timely manner.

Maintains confidentiality while communicating results to Human Resources and or Departmental Management as needed.

  • Ensures NFPA code compliance for new and existing facilities.
  • Provide support for contractor safety qualifications, worksite inspections and performance evaluations.
  • Maintains EHS department inventory of safety equipment to include PPE, First Aid Kits, RCRA / DOT / Hazard Communication labels, LOTO equipment and spill response equipment.
  • If applicable, lead efforts to create and sustain site Emergency Response Teams (First Aid Team, Spill Response Team) coordinating training, practice drills and response equipment.
  • Leads the development and maintenance of the site's emergency action plans and acts as alternate emergency coordinator for the site.
  • Collaborates on Workers' Compensation program cases with Human Resources.
  • Maintains current knowledge of new and pending legislation related to EHS. Recommends adjustments to current programs to enhance compliance.

Environmental - 30%

  • Maintains current knowledge of new and pending local, state, and federal environmental regulations. Proposes adjustments to current programs to ensure compliance.
  • Coordinates and completes all applicable environmental reporting activities to include notifications, applications, permits, reports, records, and documentation.

Ensures documents are properly maintained, collected, prepared, and submitted to applicable government agencies as required.

  • Evaluates and recommends proper management / handling of new chemicals that may affect environmental permits and determine proper disposal.
  • Oversees the EHS portion of the site hazardous and nonhazardous waste management and recycling programs. Monitors vendors and assists in preparation for transport.

Ensures all applicable personnel are trained and / or certified as required by regulation.

Minimum Job Qualifications

Education : Bachelor's degree in safety, engineering, science, industrial hygiene or other applicable technical related fields required

Experience : Minimum of 8 (8) years' experience in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene and environmental regulations in a pharmaceutical or specialty chemical manufacturing environment with a minimum of three (3) years of direct experience in developing and providing relevant training to others.

Licenses, Certificates, Registrations

BCSP, ASP (Associate Safety Professional) certification preferred

First Aid / CPR

RCRA (Hazardous Waste)

DOT Hazardous Materials

HAZWOPER Initial (40 or 24 hour) and annual 8-hour refresher required

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Expertise in planning and performing Industrial Hygiene monitoring.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects / activities / programs simultaneously
  • Proficient in MS Office software programs - Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, influencing, planning, organization, and time management skills
  • Ability to interface effectively with all levels within the company
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements (OSHA, OSHA, EPA, DOT) and NFPA codes
  • Ability to explain difficult concepts and persuade others to adopt a point of view.
  • Ability to make decisions - guided by policies, procedures and technical knowledge - that impact the company's ability to meet EHS performance and compliance objectives
  • Ability to influence all levels of the organization on EHS topics and decisions.
