The Opportunity :
The College of Engineering and Computer Science is looking for a Laboratory Manager to join the Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering team! The Laboratory Manager is responsible for managing the daily operations of the department's Environmental Engineering laboratories on-campus, as well as any field laboratories that may require installation and operation.
Responsibilities :
Interpret and enforce administrative, safety, and quality assurance related rules and policies related to laboratory and field-based facilities and research programs.
Recommend new and improved equipment, methodologies, and related programs to effectively manage such studies.
Formulate and recommend standard operating procedures to effectively control laboratory activities and research projects within said facilities.
Knowledge of analytical methods used in related research studies and data (e.g. Gas, Liquid, and Ion Chromatography). Ability to collect, analyze, and report data as appropriate for research.
Preference for experience in method development and instrument troubleshooting.
Purchase and inventory of chemicals and expendable supplies used in research and instruction of courses. Preference for billing and invoicing experience.
Ability to understand and devise quality control measures for laboratory operations. Knowledge of experiment set-ups and QA / QC procedures related to research.
Collaborate with Environmental, Health, & Safety to ensure safety procedures are followed in laboratories. Knowledge of safety policies and appropriate processes to handle violations.
Collaborate with EHS, PIs, and students in addressing audit findings and any relevant citations or incidents.
Ability to represent the Department on committees and similar efforts to address safety and related public health policies as they affect operations.
Assist in resolving specific issues and disseminating information regarding University rules, policies, and contracts.
Develop laboratory policies, set-ups, and protocols to ensure safe and efficient operation, specifically when multiple PI collaboration is essential.
Capability to train students on equipment operation, prepare standard operating procedures for analytical equipment, and ensure proper maintenance is conducted.
Cooperate with University’s Space Survey to optimize laboratory space for research activities and equipment placement.
Ability to read, understand, and apply SDS information. Knowledge of chemical safety and hazardous waste operations preferred.
Collaborate with GTAs to ensure they are equipped to instruct undergraduate course laboratories based on curriculum. Knowledge and experience with chemistry principles preferred.
Establish and maintain relationship with Vendors, Purchasing, and Finance Departments to streamline acquisition of laboratory supplies and equipment.
Understand procurement procedures and ability to use related software.
Participate in ABET review process and update materials and information.
Collaborate with Facilities Departments regarding maintenance of laboratory fixtures to minimize interruptions in day-to-day operations.
Understand chemical hygiene principles and collaborate with EHS in the assessment of safety rules and regulations. Ability to understand and proficiently use chemical inventory software.
Minimum Qualifications :
Bachelor's or Master's degree and 4+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219.
Preferred Qualifications :
Previous experience in environmental engineering or environmental science laboratory.
Previous experience in higher education.
Effectively communicate verbally or in writing in order to successfully perform the essential tasks identified in the job description.
