Overview

The Regional Director of Patient Safety is accountable for the design and maintenance of a comprehensive patient safety program and provides support in all patient safety related activities associated with accreditation standards, state and CMS regulations, Board of Stewardship Trustees established goals, performance improvement, mentorship of new patient safety leaders, and education within their respective geography, which are intended to prevent patient harm by advancing a culture of safety and high reliability that stems from evidenced based guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Standardize patient safety strategies, performance improvement, and priorities to maximize efficiency and impact of the department across facilities within the region
  • Lead high reliability implementation strategies across facilities that include but are not limited to leadership skills, universal skills, CANDOR, just culture, and a good catch program
  • Support a tiered huddle system across the region to streamline information, ensure relevant details reach the appropriate stakeholder, and foster efficient decision making at appropriate tiers during an actual or potential patient harm event
  • Develops ongoing data analysis on patient events that include serious safety events, near misses, and pre-cursor events derived by the patient safety evaluation system to strategize market level and regional focus areas
  • Provides oversight on event investigation and analysis (EIA) process, completion, and action plan development to ensure it meets organizational standards
  • Establish ongoing assessment and development of patient safety leaders that are new to the profession by creating pathways to certification by ongoing mentorship
  • Provide subject matter expertise in established guidelines to support acute care and non-acute care compliance with Hospital Accreditation Standards, State and CMS regulations, and other external audits within patient safety standards
  • Represent the region on strategic decisions and initiatives within the Patient Safety Council
  • Collaborate with national, region and facility leaders to implement standardized patient safety strategies within the region
  • Provides cross-functional collaboration with Quality, Risk Management and Patient Experience leaders / teams to respond to and resolve patient-reported safety events, including complaints and grievances

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience :

  • Bachelors of Science Degree or Equivalent in a related clinical discipline; Master’s Degree Preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of healthcare experience with 3 years of patient safety experience in acute care
  • Must demonstrate adeptness in supporting the development of programs focused on achieving positive outcomes within patient safety
  • Experience in an integrated health system is preferred
  • Experience in a matrix management environment involving integration of multiple entities is strongly desired

Required Licensure and Certifications :

Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) certification required within two years of hire

Required Minimum Knlowledge, Skills, Abiliities and Training :

  • Exceptional knowledge in patient safety evidence based standards and regulation
  • Demonstrates exceptional ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and accurately to varying stakeholders without direct oversight
  • Possess expertise in project management, performance improvement, risk management principles, patient safety theory, and planning
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legislative processes, applicable regulations, and outside regulatory agencies
  • Highly adaptive and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Strong leadership skills and fiscal management skills, with the ability to create a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration and consistent achievement of objectives
  • Proficiency in analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with ability to identify system vulnerabilities and develop and apply innovative solutions
  • Skilled to conveying complex information clearly and concisely to all levels of staff, management, and outside personnel, with the ability to motivate, influence, and persuade others
