SITE OF SERVICE :
- Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Division at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center (Milwaukee VAMC), 5000 West National Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53295
- Full Time (52 Weeks)
POSITION QUALIFICATION / REQUIREMENTS :
- Education : Associates Degree in Nursing or Bachelors Degree in Nursing.
- Accreditation : Graduate from a college or university accredited by Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
- Licensure : Possess a current and unrestricted license to practice Registered Nurse in any one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
- Cardiac Certifications : Must have the following hands-on certification by a provider recognized by the American Heart Association
oAdvance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
oBasic Life Support (BLS)
- Experience : Must have a minimum of one-year SCI experience or a minimum of two-years Med / Surg experience. Ventilator experience is preferred.
- U.S. Citizenship : Shall be a U.S. citizen.
- English Language Requirement : Shall be able to read, write, speak and understand English well enough to effectively communicate with all patients and other health care providers.
- Physical Capability : Shall be physically capable of standing and / or sitting for extended periods of time and physically capable of performing all services required under the contract.
DUTIES :
Maintain patient confidentiality and a safe patient care environment, including
familiarity with requirements such as medication administration, patient / family education,
discharge process, hazardous waste disposal, etc., as defined by The Joint Commission
and all other VA regulatory bodies.
Provide patient-centered care by performing the following tasks :
oAssess the health care needs of the patient and maintain or develop a plan of care to
meet interdisciplinary goals
oAssess and act on significant changes in the patient’s health condition
oCarry out the plan of care by performing assigning delegated tasks
oCollect and document pertinent data into the electronic patient medical record
oCommunicates and treats all patients and / or families in a courteous, tactful, and
respectful manner identify and act on predictable needs of the patient
oMeet the emotional and spiritual needs of patients and / or families
oPrioritize and complete tasks within the RN’s assigned shift
oNotify assigned physician of any changes in condition and update patient care plans
oReport incidents of verbal or physical abuse immediately to the Nurse Manager of the unit they are assigned; or designated off-shift nursing leadership
oPerform head-to-toe assessment
oInsert IV lines
oCare of PICC lines
oAdminister medication including IVs
oCoordinate and participate in admission, transfer, and discharge of patient
oMeasure vital signs, including Pain (the 5th Vital Sign), pulse oximetry, etc.
oComplete EKG as needed
oPerform wound care including dressing changes and obtaining wound cultures as
necessary
oObtain and deliver specimens to lab
oPerform tracheostomy care
oPerform non-acute / acute ventilator care, as needed
oPerform suctioning including oral, nasogastric, and tracheostomy
oAssess for and administer tube feedings
oAssist with routine urinary and bowel elimination including indwelling and suprapubic
catheters, colostomies, external devices, and digital stimulation
oEducate patients and / or families regarding health and diagnoses and medication
administration
oActivate the Emergency Medical Response as indicated based on patient presentation or
change in condition
oRespond and assist in an emergency situation
oPerform Continuous Protective Observation (CPO) duties to maintain veteran safety
oPerform patient belongings and Contraband inspection and documentation as outlined
by facility policy
oProvide clinical oversight to Licensed Practical Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants
and Health Technicians
oRapid Response and Cardiac Arrest (code) response within the unit.
oAccu-checks
HOURS :
- PM Shift RNs - (12) hour shift 7 : 30 a.m. 8 : 00 p.m., to include weekends and holidays
- Night Shift RNs - (12) hour shift 7 : 30 p.m. 8 : 00 a.m., to include weekends and holidays
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS / SKILLS
Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Must be able and willing to reprioritize on short notice and work on multiple simultaneous projects.
Flexible and able to work with various personalities. Teamwork skills required. Time management skills required. The ability to meet deadlines in a deadline intensive environment is essential.
High level of adaptability and willingness to embrace change in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
