Purpose / Summary

The Community College of Denver’s (CCD) educational programs are designed to enrich the social, civic, and economic fabric of our community, nation, and the world.

CCD has been designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HIS) since 2001, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community.

We currently enroll 8,032 students, the majority of whom are from racially minoritized populations. Thirty-three percent of CCD’s students identify as Hispanic, 32% as White;

10.6% as African American, 7% as International, 5.3% as Asian, 3.7% as more than one race, less than 1% as American Indian / Alaskan Native, and less than 1% as Hawaiian or Pacific Islander.

Additionally, CCD students are diverse in LGBTQAI+ identity, socioeconomic status, religion, age, veteran status, citizenship status, and nationality.

The faculty assignment primarily involves teaching introductory and upper-level courses sociology and related courses via multiple modalities.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be a will be a well-rounded educator who invests in teaching and learning support in face-to-face, hybrid, or online formats and has a high interest to engage in collaboration with interdisciplinary programs and / or contribute to their course offerings based on area of expertise, as well as participate cross-functionally within the institution.

This position reports directly to the Anthropology, Ethnic Studies, Psychology, Sociology, and Women and Gender Studies Department Chair and works collaboratively with other discipline faculty and the Dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

In addition to conducting classes, the job includes class preparation, maintaining regular office hours for appointment / walk-ins, student advising, student evaluation, program level assessment, attendance and participation in student events, and collaboration with enrollment and advising departments.

Attendance at department meetings and response to emails from students and supervisor within two business days is required.

Shares in leadership of the department, pathway, and college through participation in discipline / department decision making processes and work regarding curriculum, program development, scheduling and other matters.

Responsibilities also include maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.

Teaching Effectiveness

  • Primary teaching duties will be in Sociology as an academic science. Faculty member will deliver instruction consistent with the content and learning objectives of the course syllabus;
  • maintain grade and attendance records in a timely manner; recognize and respond appropriately to student diversity through equitable teaching learning practices;

utilize clear learning goals and well-planned activities; being available to students in assigned classes to provide additional academic support as needed and appropriate for the teaching assignment.

Faculty must be committed to culturally responsive teaching and working effectively with a diverse student population that varies widely in college readiness.

Additionally, faculty must be willing to engage students using a wide variety of modalities while teaching sociological curriculum grounded in critical thinking, research skills, and core values of respect, cultural competence, professional development, and ethical responsibility.

A full course load is defined as 15 credit hours per semester, with alternative assignments for administrative and related duties possible.

A commitment to student academic success that goes beyond the classroom is essential, as are effective interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills.

Service to the College

In addition to teaching, faculty in this position will work collaboratively with other discipline faculty as well as faculty across CCD and the CCCS system.

Full-time faculty develop and modify curriculum and engage in other departmental initiatives and responsibilities, including efforts to maintain departmental coherence across CCD’s many instructional venues (e.

g., online, community campuses, and Concurrent Enrollment / Early & Middle College), textbook selection, and mentoring and professional development of adjunct faculty.

Other duties may include advising students on programs, supervising student clubs and initiatives, and degree planning. All full-time faculty are also expected to serve on college-wide committees.

After gaining more experience, full-time faculty may be expected to share in broader department coordination duties on a collaborative basis.

These administrative duties may include course scheduling and staffing, assessment, budgeting, hiring and supervising of adjunct faculty in a broad range of disciplines, resolving and mediating faculty / student disputes, coordinating with other educational venues, mentoring adjunct faculty, and conducting staff-development in related fields.

It is the expectation of the college that faculty will continue to be active scholars in their chosen field. They should continue to pursue their academic growth by taking formal academic courses or by attending conferences and workshops and otherwise reading, exploring, and enriching their knowledge of the developments in the field of Sociology.

Faculty should also be active in the community. Faculty often serve as liaisons on local boards or commissions, often providing valuable service to the community as a whole.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Education :

A master's degree or higher in sociology.

Also allowed : a master's degree or higher in social work, women’s studies, gender studies, ethnic studies, social sciences, social policy, anthropology, urban studies, peace studies.

Or any master's degree or higher with 18 graduate credit hours in any of these related degrees : social work, women’s studies, gender studies, ethnic studies, social sciences, social policy, anthropology, urban studies, peace studies.

Experience :

One year of experience teaching Sociology in a community college, other accredited college, or university setting.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities :

Excellent written and oral communication skills; collaborative and organizational skills are essential.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

Experience :

  • Two or more years Community College teaching experience
  • Knowledge and / or experience with curriculum and teaching strategies to meet the needs of diverse populations
  • Collaborative teaching experience and interest in refining applicant’s individual practices
  • Commitment to and experience teaching in multi-cultural settings
  • Demonstrated effective teamwork with peers
  • Strong understanding and experience with curriculum / program / course development
  • Experience with the use of student Learning Management Systems (D2L), instructional technology, and Microsoft Office programs
  • Experience in experiential learning / active learning
  • Demonstrated use of equity-minded pedagogy / culturally responsive teaching design to address equity gaps in instructional practices
  • An understanding of data use to understand how historical patterns have shaped various groups' experiences and representation within higher education, especially how real or perceived exclusion can shape patterns of participation and outcomes is required
