Overview :

Responsible for the long-range strategic direction and management of the risk function for a major business or on a corporate basis.

Formulate and implement policies and procedures, driving data informed decisions, and collaborate with business unit management to maximize profitability within overall bank risk parameters.

Primary Responsibilities :

  • Develop, implement and maintain a risk-based change management framework and strategy for Enterprise Platforms through sound analytical processes, effective models, and guidance via appropriate policy and procedural recommendations
  • Support the First Line Risk Officer in the development and evolution of a multi-year proactive risk management strategy
  • Serve in deputy FLRO function
  • Oversee the business liaison subject matter experts in service of creating embedded partnerships with Enterprise Platform teams
  • Develop performance metrics, reporting and analysis to support data-driven decision-making and forecasting.
  • Provide direction and leadership within cross-functional teams, process improvement teams etc.
  • Collaborate with business partners on compliance and regulatory issues, Operational Risk Management, and improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate on transformation initiatives and the development of new strategies to mitigate risk.
  • Responsible for performing tasks in a manner that are compliant with applicable laws and regulations and / or that serve to help the company be in compliance with laws and regulations that apply to the business line the position supports.
  • Exercise the usual managerial authority over staff with respect to staffing, hiring, salary recommendations, performance management, employee development, and termination.
  • Exercise usual authority of a manager concerning staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, performance management and terminations.
  • Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite.

Design, implement, maintain and enhance internal controls to mitigate risk on an ongoing basis. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.

  • Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
  • Responsible for meeting and maintaining registration requirements under the Federal SAFE Act. Complete other related duties as assigned.

Scope of Responsibilities :

Results / Actions impact the Bank's long term operations, revenues and profitability.

Supervisory / Managerial Responsibilities :

Requires the ability to build consensus and move projects forward despite roadblocks and competing functional priorities;

motivate and develop staff to substantiate a bottom-line focus Effectively manage staff and promote professional growth, including succession planning.

Effectively direct cross-functional initiatives, act as a change agent etc. Ability to motivate and influence staff outside of direct reporting line.

Education and Experience Required :

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 12 years’ compliance, legal, audit, risk management, or related experience, with a minimum of 8 years in a managerial risk capacity, or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 16 years’ higher education and / or work experience,

Minimum of 5 years of managerial or supervisory experience

Experience formulating and directing cross-functional teams.

Education and Experience Preferred :

Quantitative skills including strong analytical, financial, statistical, and model development skills.

Knowledge of Product, Marketing, and Credit processes as they relate to Risk Management.

Excellent knowledge of automation techniques, scoring technologies and vendors and service bureaus servicing the risk management marketplace.

Sophisticated knowledge of PC, Core Bank process systems, Database, and Network Capabilities.

Excellent verbal and written communication, cross-functional collaboration and management skills.

Ability to communicate concepts / theories and develop alternative recommendations. Ability to make effective presentations to all levels of the organization.

Maintain solid working relationships with senior management and business partners including product, credit, operations, asset management, credit bureaus, and vendors

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $136,787.

30 - $227,978.83 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
