Position Focus :

Reporting to the Program Director, Dorceta E. Taylor, we are seeking a Program Manager to work with other staff to help develop and manage the activities of two summer internship programs : the Environmental Fellows Program (EFP) and the Yale Conservation Scholars Early Leadership Initiative (YCS-ELI).

Both programs are housed at the Yale School of the Environment (YSE) in the Justice, Equity, Diversity, Sustainability Initiative (JEDSI) Lab.

We collaborate with more than 50 organizations each year to run these programs.

EFP started in . Each summer, the national program provides 12-week internships to 30-40 master’s and doctoral students.

All program participants must complete at least one year of graduate studies before they are eligible to participate in the fellowship.

The program recruits and places students in internships nationally.

The YCS-ELI program is an outgrowth of the Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program (DDCSP), which was housed at YSE. YCS-ELI provides nine-week internship opportunities for 25-30 undergraduates who intern in the program for one or two years.

It recruits nationally and places students in internships in New England and the Mid-Atlantic.

The program manager will help develop and manage EFP and YCS-ELI. The Manager will oversee the application process, identify internship host sites, place fellows and scholars at host sites, provide orientation, monitor internship experiences, organize professional development workshops, supervise program assistants, communicate program activities, coordinate fellows’ and scholars’ participation in the New Horizons in Conservation convenings, help seek program funding, help collect and analyze data, and help prepare articles and reports.

The Program Manager helps to track and manage budgets. The Program Manager keeps in touch with EFP and YCS-ELI alums and supports them.

Principal Responsibilities include identify and contact internship host sites and foundations that support the programs to foster collaboration and growth.

This includes partnering with internship sites to prepare / create plans for the student(s) joining them, intermittent site check-ins, and acting as a liaison when concerns arise.

Help to organize and manage the program applications and selection processes. Plans and executes EFP and YCS-ELI program activities such as webinars, workshops, capstone symposiums, blogs, and participation in retreats and policy briefings.

Help to supervise the work of program assistants, fellows, and scholars. Data collection, input, and analysis to capture program data trends, budget impact, and student participation in webinars, seminars, and other student activities to determine how well they are received and what changes are needed.

This includes creating and managing the distribution of surveys for both internship sites and students.

Partner with the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Sustainability Initiative (JEDSI) to collect data, conduct literature reviews, and prepare drafts of scholarly publications.

Will create, track, and maintain program-related databases, including contact tracking for program participants. Track and organize programming activities.

Facilitate communications with all members of the program team. Update and maintain project websites. Maintain contact with and provide support for EFP and YCS-ELI alums.

Collaborate with the organizers of the New Horizons in Conservation convenings to secure the participation of fellows, scholars, and alums.

Determines what transportation, housing, and other logistics are needed for program-related travel. Help to manage program expenses.

Help to produce program handbooks and reports. May perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties

1. Oversees the advancement and growth of the program. Gives direction and leadership supporting the philosophy, mission, strategy, and annual goals and objectives.

Assumes primary accountability for disseminating and publishing all program information to create public awareness and support of the program.

2. Works closely with leadership, internal and external colleagues, and community residents to further develop and implement strategic plans.

3. Identifies, solicits, and cultivates community partnerships and collaborations to assist in the development and growth of the program.

Develops the metrics to identify and measure the success of the program. Responsible for measurements of grant success and related evaluation.

4. Assists in identifying and evaluating potential future funding sources, and contributes to the submission of grants and contracts supporting the program, including the annual submission and writing of all content areas and budgetary sections of grant applications.

Develops and manages the program’s operating budget. 5. Develops the administrative infrastructure of the program. Manages human resource and administrative functions of the program, including staffing and hiring, supervision, performance development, counseling and discipline, if warranted.

Oversees and manages information systems, facilities, and space needs. 6. Investigates, identifies, implements, and oversees the maintenance of systems to gather, track, and report information to support the initiatives of the program.

Tracks all program activities and regularly informs leadership of progress on each initiative. Recommends structural or programmatic adjustments, changes or additions based on full knowledge of missions, goals, and objectives.

7. Initiates, designs, and manages the compilation of program communications; identifying outreach potential, and promoting philanthropic and collaborative support of the program.

Contributes to the development and assists in the management of content on the program’s website and monitors all changes and additions to the editorial content.

8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of related demonstrated experience or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated experience.

Required Skill / Ability 1 :

Strong oral and written communication skills with exceptional attention to detail and a high level of proficiency with Microsoft Word;

Excel; PowerPoint; SPSS, SAS or R; ArcGIS and other web-based tools.

Required Skill / Ability 2 :

Understanding of statistics and other analytic techniques, strong organizational skills, demonstrated supervisory skills, and demonstrated experience with teaching and training others.

Required Skill / Ability 3 :

Excellent advocacy skills, leadership development and training and, understanding of group dynamics.

Required Skill / Ability 4 :

Proven prior demonstrated participation in diversity, equity, and inclusion internships, college programs, or experiential learning settings, experience with engagement of environmental foundations, and an understanding of and demonstrated experience with institutional diversity.

Required Skill / Ability 5 :

Proven knowledge of and demonstrated experience of diversity, equity, and inclusion applications in institutional settings with the demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex processes and projects.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills :

Master’s degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Studies, Environmental Sciences, Conservation, Biology, Geography, Environmental Policy, Environmental Justice, Urban Planning, Industrial Ecology, Public Health or related field and two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experiences.

Familiarity with grants and grant writing.
