Job Overview :
Our client is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented International Freight Lead to join their Chicagoland area team. The successful candidate will oversee and manage all aspects of international freight operations, ensuring the efficient and cost-effective transportation of goods across global borders.
This role requires a deep understanding of international shipping regulations, strong organizational skills, and the ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders to ensure timely delivery and compliance.
Key Responsibilities :
Freight Operations Management :
- Coordinate and oversee international freight shipments, ensuring on-time delivery and adherence to budget.
- Manage relationships with freight forwarders, customs brokers, and carriers to negotiate contracts and secure the best rates and services.
- Monitor shipment status and troubleshoot any issues that arise during transit.
Compliance and Documentation :
- Ensure all shipments comply with international trade regulations, including customs documentation, import / export laws, and shipping regulations.
- Prepare and verify shipping documentation, including bills of lading, commercial invoices, and packing lists.
- Stay updated on changes in international trade laws and regulations to ensure compliance.
Cost Control and Analysis :
- Analyze freight costs and develop strategies to optimize and reduce transportation expenses.
- Implement cost-saving initiatives while maintaining service quality and compliance.
- Prepare and present regular reports on freight costs, transit times, and operational performance.
Team Leadership and Coordination :
- Lead and mentor a team of logistics coordinators and specialists, providing guidance and support.
- Coordinate with internal departments such as sales, procurement, and customer service to ensure smooth and efficient freight operations.
- Foster a collaborative work environment and promote continuous improvement within the team.
Risk Management :
- Identify and mitigate risks associated with international freight transportation.
- Develop contingency plans to address potential disruptions in the supply chain.
- Ensure adherence to safety and security protocols throughout the transportation process.
Qualifications :
- Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in international freight operations, with a proven track record in managing global logistics.
- In-depth knowledge of international shipping regulations, customs procedures, and trade compliance.
- Strong negotiation skills and experience working with freight forwarders, customs brokers, and carriers.
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficient in logistics management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Certification in logistics or supply chain management (e.g., APICS, CSCMP) is a plus.
