St. Edward's University, a nationally ranked, independent Catholic university and Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) invites applications for a part-time (20 hours or less), 9-month , position as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Nursing, beginning August 2024.

The successful candidate will directly supervise students in the BSN program in various healthcare facilities and participate in various laboratory / simulation / classroom experiences as coordinated by the lead course faculty.

As appropriate to individual contracts, clinical faculty will be expected to be involved in service to the university, the community, and the profession.

For consideration, a candidate must have at least two years of nursing experience as an RN. Current unencumbered RN license to practice nursing in the state of Texas.

Two years of direct or indirect practice experience in an area of specialization. Graduate degree in nursing or a related area to teach in the graduate degree programs.

Academic preparation and teaching experience in nursing education. Teaching experience in online and in-person formats. Experience in electronic health records and online meeting systems.

Essential Responsibilities Include : Candidates should have the interest and ability or potential to teach a range of undergraduate courses and support a diverse student body.

  • GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES :
  • Interprets the mission and aim of the School of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing in relation to the planning and delivery of nursing care, within the framework of the agency.
  • Foster a culture of inclusive excellence through authentic relationships with students as an educator and mentor.
  • Monitor and assess student-learning outcomes and provide timely and frequent feedback to students on academic performance.
  • Collaborate with a small group of faculty to deliver high-quality instruction.
  • Serves as a role model.
  • Maintains current clinical competency and knowledge
  • Attends mandatory Orientation at a designated location on St. Edward's University Campus.
  • Deliver content in online, in-person and / or hybrid formats.
  • Attends monthly faculty meetings via zoom or in-person.
  • Attends an End-of Semester evaluation retreat with all faculty.
  • RESPONSIBILITIES RELATED TO CLINICAL AGENCIES :
  • Orients self to the St. Edward's University and Department of Nursing's Mission and Values.
  • Meets all compliance requirements of the clinical sites assigned.
  • With agreement of the course coordinator, confers with appropriate personnel within the agency to plan appropriate student learning experiences.

Maintains and supports all safety measures.

  • Serves as a positive liaison between the St. Edward's School of Health Sciences and the agency.
  • RESPONSIBILITIES RELATED TO STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND SUCCESS :
  • Supervise students at clinicals.
  • 2-3 sessions of on-campus teaching in lab and simulation.
  • Teach at either the undergraduate and / or graduate degree level to adult students.
  • Plans student assignments critically in relation to the student's level and the course objectives.
  • Plans assignments in relation to the availability of learning opportunities.
  • Identifies additional learning resources.
  • Reinforces concepts taught in the BSN curriculum.
  • Helps the student to acquire appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes required of professional nurses.
  • Supports the students in using methods of problem solving and higher-level thinking in nursing and personal relationships, through individual and focus group conferences.
  • Encourages students to assume increasing responsibility for personal development.
  • Grades all course assignments (quizzes, case studies, care plans, etc.), as indicated in the course syllabus.
  • Evaluates progress of students.
  • Provides ongoing feedback to students regarding their strengths and areas in need of improvement.
  • Guides and encourages students' self-evaluation.
  • If indicated, develops a learning prescription (see Learning Prescription Form) to improve students' skills with Clinical Course Coordinator
  • Maintains grade record for all assigned students.
  • Maintains student information in a confidential manner.
  • Confers with the course coordinator, as needed, regarding student's performance or school processes.
  • Performs student evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Submits all evaluation forms to the course coordinator, as indicated.
  • RESPONSIBILITIES SPECIFIC TO NEW INSTRUCTORS :
  • If the Instructor is not familiar with the assigned agency and / or the unit, the instructor must set up a comprehensive time for self-orientation .

It is expected that the instructor will be familiar with the unit layout, computerized charting (if applicable), unit documentation, medication administration / PYXIS access, and other procedures, PRIOR to the student's first clinical day at the agency!
