Department Overview
ALERTCalifornia provides state-of-the-art technology that supports data-driven decisions to prepare for, respond to, and recover from natural disasters.
Based at the University of California San Diego, ALERTCalifornia is a public safety program working to understand wildfires and other natural hazards and determine short and long-term impacts on people and the environment to inform management decisions.
ALERTCalifornia's multidisciplinary team is based at UC San Diego's Jacobs School of Engineering, Qualcomm Institute, and Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
The program also works closely with partners across the state.
The state-focused program manages a network of more than 1,080 monitoring cameras and sensor arrays (as of June 2024), and collects data that provides actionable, real-time information to inform public safety.
In addition to the camera network, and in response to increasingly frequent and severe climate-driven disasters, ALERTCalifornia is prioritizing novel data collection and research.
These data are open-source and are shared with fellow institutions and partners. Advanced technology offers fresh insight into the cascading disasters associated with wildfires, such as post-fire debris flows, floods, and erosion.
These data will lead to a greater understanding of natural disasters and their long-term pacts on air, water, and soil quality as well as human health in California.
Position Overview
The System Administrator serves as technical / subject matter expert and developer. Leads a team responsible for planning, design, development, implementation and maintenance of the ALERTWildfire Cloud infrastructure and related services.
Works with critical data systems to lead the effort to deliver a platform for computation, research and data acquistion.
The content includes all aspects of computer systems, networking, security and application programming for building an infrastructure needed to support the ALERTWildfire program and defining processes to implement and maintain systems.
Will be involved with machine learning and Artificial Intelligence. Makes technical recommendations related to computing hardware, network components (switches, routers, etc.
operating systems and software architectures.
Design interfaces, integrations, programs and database concepts, benchmark hardware and software, and design solutions to technical problems.
Responsible for performance by monitoring, maintaining, administering, developing, and testing computing, network, and application components related to large, complex computing platforms used for research and data acquisition.
Confer with ALERTWildfire senior management to achieve consensus on technical architectural direction. Analyze and propose new systems and technologies.
Develop and maintain a disaster recovery plan for systems as well as data recovery plan in the event of a natural disaster.
Utilizes technical expertise of system internals, network security database and operating systems, emerging cluster computing technologies and architectures and the interrelationship of all.
Provides support to the development of research computing infrastructure per the vision and goals of ALERTWildfire.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Demonstrated skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs. Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions.
Advanced demonstrated experience with large data storage arrays (>
1PB), and methods to administer, monitor, and upgrade.
Strong demonstrated experience in the programming applications that make use of direct access to relational databases.
Advanced knowledge of cloud technologies, especially object-based file systems, block storage, virtualized and elastic compute.
Proficient in programing languages including Python C, C++, Java, Perl, and operating systems shells scripts in various languages such as SH, CSH,BASH, and KSH.
Advanced knowledge of systems integration deploying complex systems and integration solutions.
Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range : $104,900 - $198,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent : $50.24 - $95.26
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
