The basics of this position :

The Director of New Student Programs is responsible for district-wide oversight and leadership of orientation and retention initiatives for new students.

This position plays a critical role in developing, implementing, and evaluating programs and services that support the successful transition and retention of first-year students.

The Director will lead the design and execution of the college's orientation programs and First Year Experience (FYE) initiatives, ensuring alignment with the institution’s strategic goals to foster student success.

This role involves collaboration with various campus departments and stakeholders to create a supportive and engaging environment for new students.

This role also involves regularly assessing program outcomes and implementing improvements based on data-driven insights to ensure continuous enhancement of student transition and retention.

What you'll do :

  • Lead and Oversee Orientation Programs : Design, implement, and manage comprehensive orientation initiatives for new students to ensure a smooth transition into college life, collaborating with campus departments to provide academic, social, and personal support.
  • Lead and Oversee First Year Experience (FYE) Programs : Develop and manage FYE programs aimed at enhancing the academic and social integration of first-year students.

Implement initiatives that promote student engagement, learning, and personal development.

Develop and Implement Retention Strategies : Create and execute a retention plan tailored to the needs of new students, focusing on increasing student persistence and success rates.

Utilize best practices and innovative approaches to support student retention.

  • Lead Case Management Efforts : Oversee case management strategies and ensure coordinated support for first-year students, focusing on individualized interventions that promote retention and success.
  • Guide Departmental Use of Early Alert Systems : Oversee the department's implementation and utilization of the Early Alert program to monitor student progress, coordinate follow-up on referrals, and analyze trends to proactively address student concerns.
  • Oversee Peer Mentoring Programs : Develop and manage a peer mentoring program that supports the orientation and retention of first-year students, providing guidance and support through peer connections.
  • Develop Student Learning Outcomes : Assist in the development and implementation of student learning outcomes that support the overall goals of new student programs and contribute to the department’s strategic plan.
  • Track and Analyze Data : Collect, track, and analyze data to assess the impact and effectiveness of orientation, FYE, and retention efforts.

Use data insights to inform program improvements and report outcomes to college leadership and stakeholders.

Collaborate with Campus Departments : Work closely with academic and student affairs departments, faculty, and staff to coordinate efforts that support new student success.

Ensure alignment of programs with institutional goals and objectives.

Supervise and Train Staff : Hire, train, and supervise professional staff, support staff, and student workers involved in new student programs.

Provide leadership and professional development opportunities to build a strong team focused on student success.

  • Manage Department Budgets : Develop and oversee budgets for orientation and FYE programs, ensuring responsible use of resources and compliance with college policies.
  • Communicate Effectively with Stakeholders : Provide regular updates on program outcomes, student needs, and strategic initiatives to relevant stakeholders, including college leadership, faculty, and staff.
  • Stay Informed on Best Practices : Keep current with trends and best practices in student orientation, retention, and first-year experience.

Implement evidence-based strategies to enhance program effectiveness.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Education, experience, and other requirements :

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications :

Previous experience hiring, supervising, and evaluating full-time and part-time professional staff is preferred.
