Requirements :
- Current and valid registration issued by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for practice in California
- At least 12 consecutive months of performing similar services within the last 3 years
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross (with AED)
- Must be proficient in the English Language (Speaking / Writing)
Responsibilities :
Under the guidance of the Institution's CEO / CME or designee, the Registered Dietitian will provide services within the permitted scope of practice for a Registered Dietitian in accordance with Institution policies and procedures.
The duties and responsibilities of the Registered Dietitian include but are not limited to, the following : Assisting and advising clinical personnel on special nutritional needs within the scope of practice for a Registered Dietitian in the State of California, as directed / supervised by the Institution's CEO / CME or designee.
- Planning dietary interventions and strategies, attending interdisciplinary team conferences, monitoring and documenting nutritional needs and goals, accepting or transmitting physician orders consistent with established protocols for implementing medical nutrition therapy, ordering medical laboratory tests related to medical nutrition therapy within established protocols, interpreting prescription diets, planning regular and special therapeutic diets, establishing menus and recipes for use by food production personnel, authorizing substitution or modification of diets, conducting training programs for facility staff, clients, patients, and others, and adhering to food safety and infection control standards.
- Conducting nutrition assessments within seventy-two (72) hours of a physician's order, consulting with patients / youth, evaluating their nutritional needs, and providing nutritional counseling, as needed, when referred by a physician.
Patients / youth may include those with conditions such as diabetes, renal issues, hypertension, HIV-positive status, and acute / chronic illnesses.
- Collecting information on patient / youth nutritional history.
- Participating in committees related to nutrition, food service, bioethics, performance improvement / quality assurance, and other relevant topics.
- Instructing institutional food service employees on the preparation and distribution of medical diets and providing dietary staff with alternative food product suggestions or allowed / acceptable food substitutions as needed.
- Providing follow-up consultations with patients / youth as needed or as ordered by a physician.
- Maintaining a professional working relationship between Food Services, Correctional Healthcare Services staff, and custodial staff.
- Complying with and practicing universal safety precautions.
- Adhering to facilities' security policy at all times.
- Maintaining a safe work environment at all times.
- Monitoring the clinic dietary service program in the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF), Correctional Treatment Center (CTC), and / or Licensed Hospital to ensure compliance with the California Code of Regulations, Title 22, SNF / CTC Dietary Services requirements, and ensuring inpatient area dietary menus are current in accordance with regulations, policies, and procedures.
