LOCATION
This position is based in the Finance Department located at 6101 Montrose Road in Rockville, Maryland.
OUR DIRECTOR OF FINANCE POSITION
The Director of Finance reports to and works in close collaboration with the Senior Vice President, Finance / CFO in directing, coordinating and carrying out all financial management functions of Charles E.
Smith Life Communities (the organization) with a principal focus on accounting, budget, financial forecasting, internal controls, financial reporting, payroll and accounts payable.
The Director of Finance is expected to analyze and present accurate financial data for multiple audiences in a timely manner, and clearly communicating the financial standing of the organization to each of those audiences.
The Director of Finance is responsible for managing the organization's accounting software applications and interfaces. This role is also responsible for all tax compliance issues affecting the organization, including the accurate and timely filing of PPT's and Form 990's and required schedules.
The Director of Finance also coordinates and leads the annual audit process through and including preparation and review of the consolidated financial statements and footnotes.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Hands on leadership of the month end close including journal entries, general ledger reconciliations and preparation of the financial statements, variances (vs budget and year over year) and analytics for all affiliated entities.
- Identify and report significant financial patterns and trends, analyze drivers and outcomes, and recommend solutions to any problem areas.
- Supervise, manage and coach finance and accounting associates (direct and indirect reports).
- Lead the annual budget and forecast process working with departmental leadership and leadership of operating departments and affiliated entities.
- Lead preparation, review and timely filing of annual tax returns including PPT's and Form 990's and supporting schedules.
- Oversee the payroll process and review related payroll reports and filings.
- Oversee the accounts payable process and review related reports and filings.
- Develop collaborative and consultative relationships with leadership of operating departments and affiliated entities providing financial as well as general business support.
- Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, debt covenants, financial requirements of grant agreements and donor restrictions.
- Manage finance and accounting associates' software and productivity tools as well as identify and project manage any related systems and process enhancements and upgrades.
- Evaluate and implement appropriate internal controls over the accounting records and processes.
- Ensure controls / processes are documented in PolicyStat and lead training of inter and intra departmental associates as applicable.
- Serve as a key resource for department leadership, and leaders of operating departments and affiliated entities on fiscal and budgetary matters to help ensure their operational success.
- Coordinate and lead the annual audit process serving as liaison with external auditors.
- Coordinate and lead response to annual insurance renewal including completion of insurance applications and provision of supporting documents and schedules.
- Monitor and report upon organizational cash flow and forecasting.
- Develop or update required accounting policies and procedures in PolicyStat and lead training of inter and intra departmental associates as applicable.
- Effectively communicate and present critical financial matters to the Vice President, Finance / CFO and members of Senior Management in a timely manner.
- Establish and promote a service oriented, "can do" operational philosophy within the department that is both proactive and responsive to the ever changing environment within which CESLC operates.
- Maintain industry and professional standards knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications;
establishing personal networks; participating in professional and industry societies and membership organizations
EDUCATION & TRAINING
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance and minimum of 7 years of relevant management experience , or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- CPA required
- Healthcare experience is a plus .
- Public accounting experience is a plus .
- Financial software implementation experience is a plus.
- Excellent analytic and communication skills and demonstrated aptitude at coaching others in financial management and analyses.
- Must have working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, advanced computer and spreadsheet skills, and extensive experience at interpreting analytical results for management and providing recommendations on business problems.
- Ability to lead and inspire others, create a work environment that is conducive to productivity and goal attainment and possess strong analytical, interpersonal, problem solving, customer service and communication skills;
be self-motivated and have a sound work ethic.
