Nature of Responsibilities :
Reporting to the Dean of Residential Student Services, the Associate Director of Sustainability will provide administrative and collaborative leadership for assigned student services and program areas related to sustainability practices and education.
The Associate Director will collaborate with the HRL (Housing & Residence Life) Facilities Planning and Operations team including external relations, student services, and general program management.
The Associate Director will establish and maintain key performance indicators that directly support and develop standard operating procedures with critical internal and external partners to ensure end-to-end operational excellence in residents’ experience.
Specific Duties % of Effort
Bring end-to-end operational excellence to the student residential experience through effective sustainability practices with intentional education and outreach.
Establish consistent standards and protocols across campuses through coordination with key stakeholders. Develop and maintain tools, metrics and indicators for assessing progress towards department sustainability goals.
Lead a multiyear residential effort to minimize energy and water use and improve ways to divert waste on all campuses. Develop a sustainability master plan in direct partnership with HRL Facilities Planning and Operations, FMD Sanitation and Recycling in alignment to Duke’s commitment to sustainability.
Coordinate, identify, integrate and manage all aspects of sustainability programs. Continually assessing goals, targets, certifications, and practices to stay abreast of current trends that will benefit the satisfaction, safety, health and well-being of the Duke community to continually ensure Duke Housing is a national leader in high quality customer services and sustainability programs.
Integrate and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with departments outside of formal authority that will routinely provide service to residents, including Student Affairs Facilities Planning & Operations, Facilities Management Department, Sustainable Duke, Landscape Services, Duke Dining and third-party service providers such as laundry and moving companies.
Liaise regularly with DEI focus groups on campus, Residential Education staff, New Student & Family Programs, Quad Councils, and Duke Student Government to understand their needs.
Establish and maintain effective communications strategy, including social media, website, news articles, and a range of other outlets with the objective of raising internal and external awareness of and support for Duke Housing’s sustainability efforts and related activities.
Represent the department on divisional and University committees and duties, including key stakeholder meetings, summer operations committees, and business development / vendor interviews.
Examples include the University Climate Commitment Advisory Council and the QuadEx ExO Project Earth program,
- Compile appropriate statistical data pertaining to the service experience and renewal needs, assessment of KPIs, and other data to inform department strategy, student outreach, and campus planning.
- Perform related duties as assigned or required to meeting departmental, division-wide and University goals and objectives.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree plus 2 years of relevant experience required; A degree in Environment Science or Sustainability and work experience with a complex organization such as Higher Education is strongly preferred.
