The Role :

The Library & Archives Paraprofessional 3 manages Brooks Library collections maintenance and coordinates closely with the CWU Archives & Special Collections to oversee student digitization operations, including running and analyzing reports, keeping abreast of system updates, troubleshooting, and resolving problems.

This position is responsible for opening the James E. Brooks Library on Saturday and Sunday, as well as closing Monday through Wednesday (see hours in "work schedule").

  • The incumbent provides excellent customer and research services to users of CWU libraries; demonstrates sound judgement to ensure a safe and welcoming learning environment;
  • directs the work of student employees during assigned shifts; ensures speedy delivery of resource sharing services; maintains building safety;

and provides access to our collections using online library tools and ensuring collection maintenance. All employees are expected to support CWU's commitment to diversity and to bring and support inclusion into the university environment.

Job Duties

Customer & Research Services

Provides courteous, effective, and timely customer service in-person and virtually.

  • Responds to and resolves complex issues and inquiries.
  • Applies senior level knowledge and skills-provides research services and resolves research inquiries; consults complex finding aids and interprets them for researchers;

guides researchers to other sources for records, publications, and information.

  • Assists or instructs patrons and student staff with use of the integrated library system and library catalog.
  • Performs circulation functions including resolution of issues and fines, managing holds, and interpreting policies.
  • Assists users with materials from our technology lending program.
  • Provides input into the development and implementation of area policies.
  • Adjusts schedule when necessary to accommodate staff outages.
  • Provides for continuity of library access services during evening and weekend hours, including resource sharing, collection maintenance, patron inquiries, and special projects.

Collections, Digitization, & Resource Sharing Services

  • Manages the collections maintenance program, including running and analyzing reports, keeping abreast of system updates, troubleshooting, and resolving problems.
  • Manages stacks maintenance schedule, facilitating regular inventory, shelf reading and collaborating with librarians on weeding projects.
  • Responsible for planning book shifting logistics to accommodate growth in the collection.
  • Develops and executes special projects to address circulation or stacks needs.
  • Contributes to collections displays.
  • Coordinate with the CWU Archives & Special Collections to oversee digitization production, copyright research, description, upload, and quality control.
  • Evaluates and monitors complex workflow processes.
  • Processes resource sharing requests, including verifying bibliographic citations.
  • Consults with faculty about course reserve needs, digitizes and uploads materials into course management or reserves system, creates persistent links to resources for course reserves.
  • Designs training documents and resources including documents, multimedia, and websites to explain how to use library resources.
  • Recommends and participates in implementing changes and improvements of unit routines or procedures.
  • Works with various committees to recommend and help enact access services.

Building Services

  • Oversees opening, closing, and monitoring of facility during assigned shifts.
  • Ensures a safe and welcoming learning environment by monitoring the physical space and exercising excellent judgment when applying university and library policies.
  • Submits maintenance request to the facilities department as needed.
  • Contacts police services when security issues arise.
  • Troubleshoots equipment such as media equipment, scanners, copiers, and printers.

Lead Duties

  • Assigns and checks work and provides training. May provide feedback to supervisor to assist with work assignments and job performance.
  • Creates training documents and resources.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience providing excellent customer service.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in an academic library or other higher education setting.
  • Experience leading others.
  • Experience scanning materials according to current digital imaging standards.
  • Direct or related experience with the digitization process including scanning, image correction, image optimization, metadata description and dissemination / distribution of content.
  • Technical experience with computers and digital imaging equipment and related software applications such as Adobe Acrobat Professional, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Excel, and standard software applications.
  • Experience with integrated library and / or resource sharing systems (Alma, RapidILL, ILLiad, etc.)
  • Experience or interest in mentoring students from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for students through various activities.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

Salary : This position is based on the range 39 of the Washington State Classification Listing, which has a minimum annual salary of $40,716 and maximum annual salary of $54,204.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Schedule / Appointment : Sundays : 10 : 30am - 7 : 30pm (1-hour lunch); Mondays - Wednesdays : 3 : 00pm - 12 : 30am (1-hour lunch);

Saturdays : 10 : 30am - 5 : 30pm (1 / 2-hour lunch).

Summer session : Sundays : 10 : 30 am-7 : 30 pm (1-hour lunch); Mondays - Wednesdays : 12 : 00pm - 9 : 30pm (1-hour lunch);

Saturdays : 10 : 30am - 5 : 30pm (1 / 2-hour lunch).

Academic intersessions : Monday - Friday 8 : 00am - 5 : 00pm (1-hour lunch)

This position is eligible for shift premium dependent on schedule / PSE Bargaining Unit 4

Working Conditions : Work is performed in an indoor office setting with frequent in-person interactions. It is essential to be able to remain at a desk / computer workstation for prolonged periods of time, perform extensive data entry and other computer-related tasks and create / maintain filing systems for departmental records.

A percentage of the shift will require some amount of stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting, walking, carrying or moving, and other movements.

On occasion, it will be necessary to lift up to 35 lbs., sometimes repetitively, and reach shelves overhead and below knees.

This position requires sharing workstations and will require a flexible schedule. Evening and weekend work are required.

Occasional travel may be required.
