Position Summary : The Thurnauer School of Music is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced teacher to join our Creative Musicianship faculty.
Thurnauer offers many levels of creative musicianship for students ages 6-18, with a typical class size of 4-5 students.
Classes are offered on Sunday between 10 : 00am-4 : 30pm and Monday-Thursday between 4 : 00-8 : 00pm, from late September 2024 through June 2025, for a total of 30 weeks.
Each class is 45-55 minutes, once a week. Depending on the candidate's background, there may be additional opportunities to teach private lessons or other offerings within the music school.
Please see Thurnauer's website for the full catalog of classes, ensembles and lessons.Creative Musicianship classes bring together elements of music theory, ear training, and composition in order to further young musicians' understanding of the language of music.
Taken alongside instrumental lessons, these classes are designed to develop the whole musician, building skills that both complement instrumental performance and deepen the student's awareness of how music is put together.
Skills such as hearing the sounds of written music before they are played (sight-singing), translating heard sounds into notation (ear-training), and making creative decisions on how to choose and combine sounds (composition) all build a complete musical fluency.
New faculty will receive training in Thurnauer's Creative Musicianship curriculum, which is based on the Walden School's Musicianship method and incorporates pedagogy from the Kod?ly and Dalcroze methods.

- Teach one or more creative musicianship classes.
- Create a dynamic and supportive classroom environment that nurtures students' creativity and musical growth.
- Collaborate with other faculty members to integrate Creative Musicianship into the broader music education program.
- Utilize a variety of teaching methods to cater to diverse learning styles.
- Participate in faculty training, faculty meetings and the school's annual "Musicianship Madness" event.
- Communicate regularly with parents and families regarding progress and goals.
Qualifications :
- Bachelor's degree in music or equivalent experience; master's degree preferred.
- Experience with classroom management and teaching music in a classroom setting (required).
- Experience teaching music theory, aural skills, composition and improvisation to students of various ages and skill levels.
- Ability to sing in tune and demonstrate simple exercises at the keyboard.
- Collaborative team player with excellent communication skills.
