A Day in the Life of a Principal Engineer

As a Principal Engineer, you will lead and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure in a wide range of contexts.

You will manage projects and guide your team through design development, design review, bid package development, permitting, and answer questions during construction.

Qualifications of a Principal Engineer :

• A Professional Engineering license in MA
• A bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering
• At least 15 years of engineering experience developing construction documents and / or public agency construction administration
• At least 5 years serving in a project and / or design management role
• A broad knowledge base in civil engineering, with specific experience in roadway design, drainage design, geometric design, 3D modeling and design of accessible public spaces
• A proven track record of past performance, delivering multiple large / complex projects on time and on budget
• Experience developing construction documents
• Experience in preparing transportation and local agency permit documents
• General experience leading multidisciplinary teams
• Interest in multimodal and active transportation design
• Experience in managing staff
• Proficiency in Computer Automated Design (AutoCAD or MicroStation) and design software (Civil 3D, GEOPAK or InRoads)
• Experience managing engineering projects in the Northeast
• Experience in preparing proposals and scope / fees
• Interest in business development

It would be a plus if you had some of the following :

• Professional Engineering license(s) in other Northeast states
• Exposure to construction management
• Experience analyzing and designing stormwater infrastructure
• Experience using stormwater design software
• Traffic engineering and Signal design experience
• Understanding of MUTCD standards
• Experience working on transit projects
• Experience in Complete Streets, bikeway, and crossing design

Work Schedule for a Principal Engineer

This full-time position typically works a hybrid schedule of 40 hours a week, with at least two to three days a week in the office.
