BASIC JOB FUNCTIONS
The Naval Architect I will work closely with the Senior Naval Architect and broader engineering team to develop ship designs, integrate design solutions, and test completed designs.
Assists the Senior Naval Architect to execute design tasks within schedule and budget. Supports the transition to production and supports the design of agreed to changes to the configuration baseline.
Creates content for presentations to customers. Resolves problems at a detailed level and escalates risks as needed.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Development of vessel concept, preliminary and detail design.
- Weight estimating.
- Development of resistance and powering estimates.
- Hydrostatic and hydrodynamic analysis.
- Sea testing and trials report writing and support.
- Perform hand calculations and FEA on structural components / assemblies to verify working stresses are below ultimate, yield, and endurance allowables.
- Ensure that all work is performed in accordance with the specifications, drawings, and terms of the contract including ABS and other regulatory standards.
- Initiate Engineering Change Requests when improvements or errors are identified.
- Development of engineering deliverables in accordance with engineering processes, ensuring safe, fit for purpose engineering deliverables.
- Coordinate with sub-contractors and vendors to receive inputs to design activities.
- Release drawings following company workflow.
- Create engineering reports to show compliance with project requirements based on design, test, analysis, and similarity.
- Partner with quality to troubleshoot installation issues, determine root cause, and recommend solutions.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of the department by creating work instructions for best practices.
- Closely managed and tasks are limited in complexity.
QUALIFICATIONS & ATTRIBUTES
ESSENTIAL
DESIRABLE
Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture
Experience in ship construction.
Minimum 0 to 2 years of experience in hull form development, arrangements, resistance and propulsion, structural design, hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, vibrations, weight, or stability analysis.
Experience with government procurement and contracting, in particular reviewing requirements and performing specification traces.
Experience working in small teams of engineers.
Knowledge of steel and aluminium shipbuilding, mechanical and electrical systems to ABS, USCG, IMO and other regulatory requirements.

Advance Analysis Working knowledge of specialty naval architecture software for hull form, stability, motions, maneuvering, structures, or powering prediction.
CAD Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Rhino3D, or similar.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Position requires use of computer, telephones, and other office equipment, reading, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening, and hearing ability and visual acuity.
- While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, stoop, kneel, climb, crouch, talk and hear.
- Ability to lift packages, equipment, etc., up to 20 lbs.
- Position occasionally requires ability to work in a manufacturing environment and onboard boats and ships from the beginning of production through the sea trails.
This includes mobility to work in and around incomplete hull structures.

RELATIONSHIPS
Birdon’s senior management team, including Divisional and Functional Managers, may provide additional direction and duties from time to time.
Clear communication and people skills are necessary as direct contact with Birdon clients, prospective clients, and production team is an important aspect of this position.
