The Energy System Research and Technology group within Medtronic’s Energy and Component Center in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, is looking for a Senior Principal Electrical Engineer with battery pack and battery management system design experience.
Our mission is to deliver energy solutions throughout Medtronic. These energy solutions support therapies that span the care continuum;
from patient monitoring to robot assisted surgical technologies that relieve pain, restore function, and improve lives for our patients.

A Day in the Life
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
- Researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical components, battery packs, and battery management systems.
- Models and designs electrical test equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purpose.
- Write medical battery pack test plans and reports.
- Write and compile code for embedded controllers such as PIC, uART, other microprocessors.
- Generate, debug and trouble shoot complex battery management system algorithms.
- Integrate, test, and document real-time algorithms.
- Perform root cause analysis of failed components.
- Design and execute test methods to characterize safety, ensure reliability, and verify adherence to standards, product, and systems requirements.
- Interface with certifying body test houses to verify / certify to global regulatory standards including UN38.3. IEC-60601, IEC-62133-2, UL2054, UL1642.
- Work under minimal supervision.
- Ensure understanding of all quality policy / system items that are personally applicable. Follow all work / quality procedures to ensure quality system compliance and high-quality work.
Must Have : Minimum Requirements
- Bachelors degree required
- Requires a University Degree and minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience
Nice to Have
- BS in Electrical Engineering strongly preferred
- Background in design of battery packs and battery management systems for medical devices
- Design experience with Altium, Simulink and Simscape Battery and BMS modeling
- Fundamental understanding of cell balancing within a pack
- Familiarity with battery test systems Chroma, MACCOR, Arbin
- Fluency with commercial off-the-shelf Impedance Track and M5 fuel gauging
