Job Summary

The ACES-Ag Information Technology Unit at Auburn University is seeking a talented and motivated individual to fill the position of a Systems Engineer / Associate Systems Engineer supporting the Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES), College of Agriculture (CoAg), and Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station (AAES).

The successful candidate will play a vital role managing the organizations' virtual servers (primarily Linux) and related functions including file servers, DNS, DHCP, LAMP stack, security, and patching.

The Systems Engineer must be able to work independently, collaboratively, and in partnership with other IT professionals in the ACES-Ag IT unit and the Auburn University IT community.

The ideal candidate applies systems thinking, possesses superior interpersonal and communication skills, is self-motivated, and is a lifelong learner who supports others in seeking new knowledge and skills.

Working onsite is a requirement of the job. Work assignments may have established deadlines and require periods of "on-call" support responsibilities.

Essential Functions

Essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to :

  • Installing, updating, and remediating multiuser enterprise server operating systems including Ubuntu, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and Windows server.
  • Maintaining storage server systems and technologies including NFS and SMB.
  • Designing, implementing, and maintaining virtual infrastructure such as VMware and containerized technologies such as Docker.
  • Supporting networking services including DNS, DHCP, LDAP, SSH, and PostFix.
  • Installing and updating commercial and open-source server applications manually and through automation tools.
  • Overseeing server monitoring, penetration testing, and vulnerability remediation tasks.
  • Supporting web server applications including Apache, PHP, MySQL, and WordPress.
  • Monitoring server backup and system logs to identify, document, and remediate potential security and configuration problems.
  • Assisting faculty with innovative solutions to meet file storage needs for research projects.

This position is posted at two levels. The selected candidate will be assigned a level based on education and experience.

Associate Systems Engineer

  • High School / GED plus 8 years of experience, or
  • Associate's degree plus 4 years of experience, or
  • Bachelor's degree - no experience required.
  • Salary grade range for this level : $45,300 - $72,500
  • Typical starting salaries are between $54,367 - $63,433

Systems Engineer

  • High School / GED plus 11 years of experience, or
  • Associate's degree plus 7 years of experience, or
  • Bachelor's degree plus 3 years of experience required.
  • Salary grade range for this level : $55,300 - $94,000
  • Typical starting salaries are between $68,200 - $81,100

Salaries are calculated based on years of experience, education, and certifications.

Scope of Experience

Experience should be in the administration and application deployment of distributed computer systems.

Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications

Minimum Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.

  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently both individually and as a team member.

Minimum Technology Skills

  • Demonstrable abilities of interaction with Linux systems at the command line to include knowledge of the general organization of the file system, familiarity with various services and their configuration files, and familiarity with network configuration files and tools.
  • Demonstrable ability to script in shell scripting.
  • Experience patching, backing up, and securing Linux servers.
  • Experience managing DNS, DHCP, LDAP, SSH, and PostFix.
  • Experience managing Apache, MySQL, PHP, and WordPress. Strong technical aptitude and computer skills, including proficiency with professional computer systems and office applications.

  • Experience managing Windows servers to include configuring, patching, securing, and backing up.
  • Able to leverage a highly technical mindset with a creative and analytical approach to problem-solving.
  • Experience with GNU Mailman mailing list manager, PowerShell, Qualys, and Nagios.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure cloud platform.
  • Experience working in the Land Grant University System.
