DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The communications team is a part of the Marketing and Communications department, which is responsible for planning and executing comprehensive strategies for managing the GBH brand, as well as its house of brands across all media platforms and audiences, both internal and external.
The communications team manages media relations, public relations, and internal and external communications functions that help raise awareness and enhance the reputation of GBH.
JOB OVERVIEW
The Director of Communications reports to the Chief Marketing Officer and will be a key member of the Marketing and Communications leadership team.
This role will provide strategic vision and leadership for the communications team as they manage a consistent public-facing story about the work being done at GBH.
This role is primarily responsible for the management of internal and external communications to be delivered on behalf of the foundation.
The successful candidate will create professional and consistent messaging and ensure that all communication aligns with GBH's mission and values.
The Director of Communications must be on call to execute urgent communication planning as needed, in addition to anticipating future needs and opportunities.
This role is based in Boston, MA, and requires your on-site presence every Tuesday and Wednesday at our Brighton office.
Additional in-office days may be required at the discretion of your manager.
What you get to do :
- Produce and manage a comprehensive communication plan for the foundation that aligns messaging with our mission across programs, project, brands, and GBH leadership.
- Serve as the primary media contact for the Foundation.
- Enhance CEO visibility through thought leadership, speaking opportunities, social media presence, award opportunities, and partner with them to maximize positive public facing opportunities.
- Oversee GBH's crisis communications and issues management execution.
- Lead a team of communications professionals helping to execute the communications strategy.
- Develop a strong network of external relationships, including press, and influencers, and colleagues in public media (PBS, NPR, PRX, NEPM, CAI) to deliver the Foundation's messaging.
- Provide strategic oversight of public facing communications by guiding departments across the foundation to follow key messages and storylines.
- Responsible for any RFP or management of communications agencies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in public relations, communications, or journalism
- 8-10 years minimum of related experience

- Agency experience a plus
