ABOUT THE POSITION
Reporting directly to the VP, Chief Accounting Officer and Corporate Controller, the Assistant Corporate Controller is a critical and highly visible role within Astec Industries.
The position directs execution of the accounting policies and procedures of the organization and ensures that the Company is in compliance with United Stated generally accepted accounting principles (US GAAP).
This position will work and correspond with multiple domestic and international business partners as well as directly oversee financial responsibility (actuals, budget / forecast) for the Corporate group.
This position will be responsible for collaborating proactively with the Company's external reporting process owner(s) to ensure compliance with the Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC") and other governmental bodies, including but not limited to the Forms 10-K, 10-Q, 11-K and 8K filings, for purposes of ensuring financial data is collected completely and aggregated to meet reporting needs.
It will also be responsible for supporting the implementation and application of technical accounting guidance and supporting the Company's accounting positions are appropriate, thoroughly communicated, and in compliance with the established accounting framework on an ad hoc basis.
This role will be involved in establishing a shared service management approach for managing the Company’s global Oracle Fusion Cloud enterprise resource planning system.
This role will also bear responsibility for reviewing and analyzing the consolidated financial results and position of the Company as well as implementing corrections or improvements when required.
Oversight of the execution of financial controls will also be a key element of this role. The role will also coordinate with internal and external audit.
Special projects will be supported as required.
The ideal candidate will have a thorough knowledge of US GAAP and experience in accounting for a public company. S / he will have a strong background in all areas of accounting, to include general ledger management, monthly financial closing, budget / forecasting and internal control execution.
In addition to technical expertise in the field, the successful Assistant Controller is able to deliver results under tight deadlines.
S / he is required to maintain a "big-picture" focus while ensuring short-term goals are accomplished. S / he is required to mentor, motivate and provide guidance to the staff s / he supervises.
Experience with an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system is strongly desired.
Key Deliverables
Ensures that Company financial records, under responsibility, are maintained in compliance with Company policies, US GAAP and SEC reporting.
Responsible for reviewing monthly / quarterly account reconciliations and other documents to ensure this compliance.
- Prepares budget, forecast or outlook for Company entities, under responsibility
- Implementation and application of technical accounting guidance as well as ensure that the Company's accounting positions / processes are appropriate, well thought out, and in compliance with the established accounting framework.
- Direct oversight of accounting areas that are highly complex and / or subjective.
- Manages and ensures the success of all internal and external audits and related execution of the Company’s internal control environment.
- Drives continuous improvement activities to increase the effectiveness of financial processes and the information systems supporting these processes.
- Serves as a change agent, proactively identifying opportunities and implementing process efficiencies to improve both functional and overall business operations and results.
- Ensures that the accounting department is staffed with qualified financial personnel capable of meeting the objectives and responsibilities, noted above.
Responsible for continued development of these associates.
Key Activities & Responsibilities
- The Assistant Corporate Controller will be part of a team that implements and executes policies and procedures to identify, resolve and document accounting processes, in addition to creating procedures to make the close and reporting processes more efficient and accurate
- Compile and analyze financial reporting packages for all Legal Entities to evaluate for compliance with financial and regulatory reporting requirements
- Ensure timeliness and accuracy of Corporate financial and management reporting and the integrity and compliance of all financial and regulatory reporting, controls, processes and systems for actual results and budget / forecast.
- Oversee centralized processes as developed or assigned (i.e. leases, fixed assets, general ledger management, etc.)
- Management of external financial audits and coordination with internal audit
- Support M&A efforts for the full transaction cycle (due diligence through integration), as needed
- Preparation of work papers / memos supporting the quarterly significant accounting matters and special transactions, ad hoc, as needed
- Create a teaching organization that educates cross-functionally on accounting processes / topics, financial and compliance impacts of key initiatives and raise the overall financial acumen of peers outside of finance
- Review and ensure application of appropriate controls, SOX compliance and financial procedures
- Oversee the month-end close process, reviewing procedures to eliminate inefficiencies
- Remain current on audit best practices and state, federal and local laws regarding company operations (i.e. escheatment, tax payments, 1099s, etc)
To be successful in this role, your experience and competencies are :
- 7+ years of Corporate and / or Public Accounting experience; combination preferred
- Active CPA license required
- Excellent financial modeling skills
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP, internal controls and financial reporting, required
- Proven ability to lead and motivate teams; achieving organizational focus on key priorities, providing clear direction, delegating, actively communicating and coaching / mentoring to achieve a high-performing team
- Must have an outstanding attention to detail and process rigor
- Ability to work collaboratively across departmental functions
- Excellent communication and leadership skills are mandatory
- Exhibits a strong ability to handle multiple demands with a sense of urgency, drive and energy
- Lead research and communication of results comparing actual vs forecast and plan to senior executives monthly with insight on main drivers / trends
- Highly proficient in excel with the ability to maintain and update complex KPI trackers and quickly build detailed financial models from scratch
