The Allen Institute for Neural Dynamics is focused on making fundamental discoveries in systems neuroscience. We are interested in how the brain builds our understanding of the complex world to guide the flexible behaviors.

The answers will be in terms of defined neuron types and circuits. Employing a team-based approach for discovery neuroscience, we strive to uncover the neural basis of behavior through technological innovation, cutting-edge experiments, modeling, and theory.

We are seeking a Research Associate II to be part of the Research Operations group within Allen Institute for Neural Dynamics to provide support to ongoing research projects aimed at linking in vivo functional imaging datasets to ex vivo spatial transcriptomic datasets.

Experimental approaches and responsibilities will include tissue-sectioning, RNA and protein localization in tissue sections and intact brains (ISH, IHC), tissue clearing and tissue expansion, staining, and reagent Prep.

We are looking for individuals with a background in biological sciences with the temperament to work both collaboratively and independently in a fast-paced work environment with minimal supervision.

The successful applicant will have at least 2 years of histological bench experience and will receive training in all relevant techniques.

Essential Functions

  • Professional handling of fixed and unfixed biological specimens in an RNAse-free environment
  • Thin sectioning techniques using microtomes and cryostats
  • Fluorescent hybridization methods
  • Tissue fixation techniques and tissue clearing
  • Make various large volume bulk reagents to support Histological processes and other core processes
  • Data tracking and organization via lab notebooks and spreadsheets, Microsoft office suite of tools, custom Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
  • Work in a collaborative environment, cinluding supporting PhD-level scientists by assisting with their projects and large internal team science efforts
  • Communicate effectively with others inside and outside the organization, e.g. through presentations within the institute and at scientific meetings, and publications in peer- reviewed journals
  • Follow detailed instructions in execution of laboratory tasks
  • Multi-task and complete routine tasks with minimal supervision
  • Contribute to the development of new protocols including quality control and troubleshooting of processes and results
  • Assist in overall operations of the wet lab including training new hires on procedures and methods

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related field
  • 2 years relevant experience working with tissue sections in a wet lab

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Experience with biological microscopy, including microscope operation / data collection and image viewing in Fiji or Photoshop
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a high-performance group environment
  • Working knowledge of brain neuroanatomy
  • Highly motivated researcher with excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and complete tasks on time
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and attention to detail

Work Environment

May enter laboratory environment, including potential exposure to lasers, biohazards

Animal Care Services

  • May require exposure to and handling of laboratory animals, including pre- and post- operative care for mice
  • May require performing euthanasia and tissue collections from mice

Physical Demands

  • Occasional lifting to 30 pounds
  • Fine motor movements in fingers / hands to operate computers and other office equipment, lab equipment

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work

This role is currently working onsite and is expected to work onsite for the majority of working hours. The primary work location for this role is 615 Westlake Ave N.

with flexibility to work remotely on a limited basis.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

All employees who work with live animals must complete an Occupational Health medical history form and / or consultation with an Occupational Health Provider and receive clearance to work with animals.

Depending on your health history and job responsibilities, an annual respiratory health screening and clearance to use a respirator may also be required.

Annualized Salary Range

  • $58,950 - $78,600*
  • Final salary depends on required education for the role, experience, and level of skills relevant to the role, along with work location, where applicable.
