PURPOSE :

Under the clinical supervision of Intensive Intervention Behavior Coordinator, the BCBA and administrative supervision of the classroom teacher, the primary duty of a Paraeducator is teaching, tutoring, and instruction of the students in the classroom environment.

Paraeducators provide instruction to the students through the implementation of the scientific principles of behavior analysis (ABA therapy) across all hours of students' day and in all environments to improve Quality of life outcomes.

This includes knowledge and implementation of students' clinical, educational, vocational, and daily living skills objectives.

Thorough competence of the theoretical components and practical applications of behavior analysis are critical to the successful performance of Paraeducators and the education for students.

Intensive instruction is provided for Paraeducators to gain competence in the following : discrete trial teaching, task analysis training, incidental teaching procedures;

data collection and analysis and methods of increasing, decreasing, and shaping various behavior repertoires.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

The list of essential duties and responsibilities, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the task to be performed.

The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such duties are a logical assignment to the position.

1. Paraeducators work as part of an interdisciplinary team of professionals who develop curricula and provide instruction to maximize students’ skills and independence.

A. Thorough knowledge and competent implementation of all students’ educational programs and behavior management guidelines in a 1 : 1 or small group format.

B. Implement behavior analytic teaching procedures in classroom and community, including :

  • Discrete trials
  • Task analyses
  • Incidental teaching
  • Direct Instruction
  • Structured teaching within the classroom

2. Implement behavior analytic teaching procedures across all domain areas to improve Quality of Life outcomes including :

A. General Curriculum (ELA, Math, Science and History)

B. Independence skills :

  • Communication
  • Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s; , personal hygiene)
  • Social skills
  • Vocational skills
  • Leisure and recreation skills
  • Adaptive physical education
  • Community
  • Self-preservation

3. Individualize lesson plans and teaching procedures to accommodate each student’s learning style such as :

  • Prompting and fading strategies
  • Reinforcement
  • Shaping
  • Errorless teaching

4. Ensure that skills generalize to other people, different environments (home and school) and to relevant activities. Strategies include :

  • Training in multiple settings
  • Training with multiple examples
  • Training with multiple teachers

5. Providing student skill-acquisition through the implementation behavior analytic procedures to teach appropriate functional alternatives to challenging behavior through a variety of means including :

  • Functional Communication Training
  • Differential Reinforcement of Alternative behavior
  • Tolerating delays
  • Problem solving
  • Self-management

6. Documents all data collection the same day as observations are performed utilizing mobile data collection devices.

7. Trains Life Skills Instructors and Paraprofessionals in the ChildBridge Center for Education for students transitioning to less restrictive environments and disseminating student assessment information to the team.

8. Assists with the development, implementation, and / or monitoring educational curricula, including, but not limited to, completing core skills and other educational assessments.

9. Actively participates in regular clinical and team meetings.

10. Collaborates with Teachers, Case Managers, Speech & Language Pathologists, Behavior Analysts, Occupational Therapists, Nursing staff, and other team members in providing effective and efficient services to students including, but not limited to, implementation of behavior, communication, and sensory plans.

11. Provides instructional support to assigned students to implement educational programs as determined by the teacher / related services team / administrator (Principal).

  • Constructs / modifies / adapts instructional materials / games / displays / learning centers
  • Works with students to operate computer and supportive technology
  • Supervises the student’s completion of educational activities as outlined in the IEP.
  • Maintains records and files relevant to assignments anecdotal notes, written observations, and accurate education folders.

12. Communicates and shares ideas and concerns with lead teacher / classroom teacher / Principal / and other team members.

13. Actively participates in meetings as required.

14. Assists with critical activities such as classroom transition times, mealtimes and toileting.

15. Supervises students as required in classroom, media room, cafeteria / multi-purpose room, sensory room, gym, playground and field trips.

16. Fosters student independence.

17. Assists with the development of students’ families’ in-home programs.

18. Assists with the development and implementation of assessment methods to help decrease problem behavior and increase appropriate behavior for the students.

19. Ensure all students’ safety and implement all safety procedures.

20. Record / document and compile all necessary behavioral and educational data accurately and in a timely fashion.

21. Implements of all safety plans and emergency procedures.

22. Accurately completes all required documentation within required timeframes to communicate to team members.

23. Works collaboratively as a member of the team, including assisting to help maintain a clean and organized learning environment, sanitize all surfaces, equipment and classroom toys and other duties as directed by the supervisors.

24. Punctual and competent completion of all team assignments.

25. Maintains American Heart Association certification in First Aid and CPR.

26. Successfully completes Little City Foundation required training, re-training, and any additional training as required by Little City Foundation policies and practices, or as assigned by his or her immediate supervisor.

27. Other duties as assigned by the administrative and clinical team.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Must have a high school diploma or GED certification and be at least 21 years of age. Paraprofessional Educator License issued by the Illinois State Board of Education, required.

Bachelor’s Degree in human services, education, or disability related field and Paraprofessional Educator License, or Professional Educator License / Professional Educator License with stipulations, preferred.

Successful completion of 40 hour coursework and competency assessment within 90 days of hire of Registered Behavior Tech (RBT) training required.

RBT exam and certification are not required. Experience using Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT :

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is subject to sitting, walking, and standing for prolonged periods;

frequently grasps, lifts, holds, or feels objects; occasionally stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls. The employee frequently is required to use manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination when working with persons served and handling office, medical, or household equipment.

The employee is subject to assist and lift up to 50 pounds with varying amounts of assistance on a reoccurring basis. The employee is required to have corrected vision and hearing within normal range and the ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Must have the ability to perform CPR and CPI. Occupational exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious substances, including communicable diseases when performing personal care (Category III).

Occasional exposure to cleaning agents and disinfectants. Residential work environment with a noise level of normal to loud.

Must successfully complete required physical management training (non-violent self-defense) including, but not limited to :

  • Protective holds, movements and carries
  • Blocking and redirecting student movements against the student’s weight (40-250 pounds)
  • Physical interventions in response to aggressive and self-injurious behavior
  • Ability to move quickly and confidently to intervene in situations when protective holds and / or movements are deemed necessary
  • Ability to pursue a student who elopes.
