POSITION SUMMARY

The Community Relations / Crime Prevention Program Manager performs professional and administrative level work coordinating community relations, crime and fire prevention programs.

Plans, organizes, implements, and coordinates all programs and activities associated with safety education, fire prevention and crime prevention.

Leads public information for the police department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manages the police department’s efforts in assessing needs, planning, developing, and implementing community relation programs and projects relating to crime and fire prevention.
  • Organizes and supervises intern and volunteer programs.
  • Provides programs for the community such as Neighborhood Watch and National Night Out.
  • Coordinates and schedules crime prevention programs, including business-crime prevention.
  • Prepares and delivers presentations on school, personal, and traffic safety to educate citizens.
  • Partners with community and develops problem solving solutions.
  • Plans, directs, coordinates, and organizes the development and implementation of methods for communicating information to the public by the use of videos, email, Internet, brochures, news releases, presentations, displays, crime maps, media outlets, public broadcasting or other mediums.
  • Establishes and maintains social media accounts for the Police Department while working closely with the City Communications Team.

Creating and capturing content to post on social media accounts that are geared towards community involvement.

Supplements the role of a Public Information officer (PIO) and works closely with the Professional Standards Bureau (PSB).

Aids the recruiting efforts with videos and content being disseminated on social media.

  • Create, post and manage social media messages that are a matter of public safety and or concern.
  • Create and manage audio / visual material related to public relations and community activities.
  • Conducts meetings with various community and citizen groups.
  • Establishes and maintains positive relations with community members and business leaders.
  • Participates in special events and programs.
  • Provides assistance throughout the City when requested.
  • Conducts home and business security surveys, as requested by the community.
  • Trains personnel in the techniques involved in presenting safety education.
  • Interacts with other agency coordinators, crime / fire prevention organizations, public officials and federal agencies.
  • Maintains liaison with other departments and the community, as well as federal, state, local, and other public officials.
  • Monitors expenditures. Assists in assuring effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, material, facilities, and time.
  • Answers letters of inquiry and talks with patrons; addresses public and civic organizations, which informs the public of directives, polices and procedures.
  • Coordinates development of a neighborhood watch newsletter. Gathers information from departmental personnel, reviews and edits all articles, and coordinates distribution to the community.
  • Develops and publishes comprehensive citizen and business safety packets. Designs informational references to target specific audiences, or specific hazards and distribute to the appropriate audience.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of departmental directives.
  • Represents the department at various governmental and professional meetings.

PREPARATION AND TRAINING

Education : High School Education or GED required

Work Experience : Experience in Community Relations or Crime Prevention in a law enforcement setting is preferred.

Certifications and / or Licensures : None, POST Certified Police Officer preferred.

Required Driver’s License : Valid Colorado driver’s license and a clear or acceptable MVR

An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge

Advanced knowledge of :

Working Knowledge of :

Applications software for Windows environment, Microsoft Office preferred.

Basic knowledge of :

  • Police Operations
  • Crime Patterns

Skills and Abilities

Computer Skills Strong skills needed to develop presentations and spreadsheets. Ability to record, edit and publish audio / video material for internal and external sources.

Communication Advanced skills required for developing and delivering presentations. Also needed to establish and maintain working relationships with employees, public, and other agencies.

A strong understanding of social media platforms and the ability to post messages in a public forum.

Analytical Advanced skills needed to evaluate program effectiveness and efficiency.

Project Management Advanced skills needed to facilitate meetings and to supervise volunteer programs.

General Management Strong skills required for budget management

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a standard office environment and in the field. The employee is exposed to various weather conditions including wet, hot and cold conditions.

Also exposed to various environmental conditions which may include excessive noise; solvents, grease, and oils; slippery or uneven walking surfaces.

SALARY RANGE

$75,761 - $113,507 / Annual Salary
