Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing – Director of Training

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (PBS) and the Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing (ISGMH) at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine (FSM) seek a full-time non-tenure-eligible Clinical-Educator at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

The faculty appointment will be in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and affiliated with ISGMH. The Director of Training will spend 60% of their time dedicated to training, research, and administration and 40% on clinical practice.

Position Description

Training, Research, and Administration (60%)

We have identified the need to develop training programs around LGBTQ health, mental health, and wellbeing. Given ISGMH’s expertise and background, we can help future health and mental health workers and practitioners, as well as frontline community organizations, be better prepared and knowledgeable of the needs and vulnerabilities of LGBTQ individuals and communities.

In addition, many of our community partners, with whom we have strong collaborations, have specific expertise that can help refine and focus trainings for health and mental health workers and practitioners.

The Director of Training will also help catalyze other areas of training infrastructure provided by ISGMH. The Director of Training will be responsible for conducting a landscape analysis to determine key training topics, and stakeholder focus groups to identify key training audiences and preferred training formats.

The director will also identify how these trainings can integrate with the University’s educational programs (e.g., certificates, continuing education, etc.

This background work will lead to the development of accessible trainings on a range of LGBTQ-related health, mental health, and wellbeing topics.

The range of trainings will be provided via multiple formats to meet the needs of health and mental health workers and practitioners and their organizations or agencies.

Additionally, the Director of Training will expand upon other grant-funded initiatives in ISGMH that have training components whose audiences are health and mental health workers and practitioners, social services and nonprofit organizations, and graduate and postdoctoral level trainees.

Specifically, these include the Implementation Science Coordination Initiative (ISCI), the Sociostructural Implementation Science Coordination Initiative (SISCI), and the Summer Intensive Program in Intersectional BIPOC SGM-focused HIV Science.

Clinical Practice (40%)

Primary clinical responsibilities include providing science-based psychological assessment and treatment for adult outpatients with all categories of psychiatric disorders, with a particular emphasis on providing care to diverse individuals who are LGBTQ.

Clinical services will be primarily conducted within Northwestern Medicine’s Pride Center ( ).

Qualified candidates will experience developing and conducting trainings. Candidates will also have obtained a PhD or PsyD from a clinical psychology program that is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) or the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System and completed an APA-approved internship.

It is also preferred that successful candidates have fellowship-level training in the assessment and treatment of LGBTQ populations.

Qualified applicants will also have well developed competencies that facilitate their work with diverse communities and patients with intersectional identities.

Qualified candidates will also be licensed or license eligible as a Clinical Psychologist in the state of Illinois. The start date is negotiable, and the position will remain open until filled.

The Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing (ISGMH) at Northwestern University, founded in 2015 and housed on Northwestern’s Chicago campus, is the nation’s first university-wide center focused exclusively on LGBTQ health.

It provides leadership and infrastructure that promotes innovative, multidisciplinary research to improve the health and wellbeing of LGBTQ individuals and communities.

The Institute provides unique opportunities for exceptional research and training for the next generation of LGBTQ scholars, and it utilizes innovative modalities to disseminate knowledge widely to the LGBTQ community, the public at large, scholars, service providers, educators, and policymakers.

Currently, ISGMH has 20 core faculty, over 110 staff and trainees, and over 30 faculty affiliates across Northwestern.
