DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

This position reports directly to the Department's Communications Director, serving as a Communications Coordinator. In this role, the position is instrumental in shaping and executing both external and internal communication strategies to elevate the well-being, safety, and independence of Florida's seniors, their families, and caregivers.

Core duties include, but are not limited to :

Driving strategic social media initiatives to amplify the Department's online visibility, foster meaningful engagement with the aging community, and highlight vital programs and services.

Responsibilities include crafting compelling content, analyzing performance metrics, and ensuring a cohesive voice across all digital platforms.

  • Leading the development and production of the Department's biannual publication, Aging Outlook. This involves collaborating with key contributors, managing project timelines, and ensuring the publication effectively communicates essential updates, policies, and initiatives to Florida's aging network, lawmakers, and other stakeholders.
  • Identifying and executing creative communication opportunities while refining key messaging to diversify and expand the reach of communication deliverables, ensuring alignment with agency goals and initiatives.
  • Assisting the Director of Communications in generating earned media by crafting press releases, proclamations, communication toolkits, op-eds, talking points, social media campaigns, articles, newsletters, and other high-impact external deliverables.
  • Supporting external affairs communication efforts, ensuring timely and effective dissemination of key information to stakeholders and the public.
  • Traveling as required to support communication initiatives, with attendance being an essential function of the role.
  • Performing additional communication-related duties as assigned by the Director of Communications, with a focus on adaptability and teamwork.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY :

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications / public relations, marketing, English, or other relevant area of study.
  • Minimum of two years of working experience with media relations and public affairs.
  • Working knowledge of government.
  • Experience in public speaking.
  • Experience with MS Office Suite, social media strategy for Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms.
  • Excellent administrative skills and have the ability to multi-task and conform to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to communicate technical information in common terminology.
  • Experience in pitching earned media opportunities.
  • Must be able to work well in a team environment.
  • Experience with photography helpful, but not required.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite helpful, but not required.
  • Knowledge of the rules of grammar and AP style.
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of media relations, public relations, editing and marketing.
  • Ability to assist in developing long range goals and objectives.
  • Ability to select and provide appropriate information to others.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively; and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

REQUIREMENTS :

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications / public relations, marketing, English, or other relevant area of study.
  • Minimum of two years of working experience with media relations and public affairs.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver license.
  • Occasional travel.

Preference will be given to the Department of Elder Affairs employees.
