Associate Director of Volunteer Leadership

Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a national and global leader in higher education.

We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicinestrengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients.

Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 2-3 days per week.

The manager will confirm the teams core onsite days where the majority / all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.

The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS) seeks an Associate Director of Volunteer Leadership to join our team in achieving our fundraising objectives.

The Associate Director of Volunteer Leadership is an integral member of the Schools External Affairs team in our effort to secure philanthropic support for the Krieger School to pursue its mission of education, research, and discovery.

Our team is dedicated to connecting the passions of our donors to the needs of the school to realize our mission.

The Associate Director of Volunteer Leadership is a key member of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS) team, serving to facilitate the Schools fundraising and prospect pipeline building efforts and volunteer leadership management.

The Associate Director will act as a key staff liaison to select committees of Krieger School Boards and Councils with a focus on the working committees of the Krieger School Deans Advisory Board and the Second Decade Society.

The associate director would serve as a secondary relationship manager (SRM) for the volunteer leads of some of these committees, provide staffing support to the groups, and advance efforts to build a pipeline of future leaders for the boards and councils of KSAS.

Key responsibilities :

  • Manage and support the overall volunteer pipeline building strategies, tracking and process in conjunction with the Director of Constituent Engagement and the respective board / council liaison for all 7 leadership areas (Krieger School Advisory Board, Second Decade Society, Center for Financial Economics Council, Physics and Astronomy Council, Humanities Council, JHAA Alumni Council and Leadership Fellows).
  • Manage data tracking and analytics for all of the boards and councils.
  • Implementation and management of a new online board portal for KSAS boards and councils.

Boards and Councils Management (50%)

Krieger School Advisory Board :

  • Staff and provide support to four main committees of the board : Membership, Development / Campaign, Strategic Plan, and Executive, as well as identified task forces :
  • Membership Committee :
  • Manage peer-to-peer program and vetting calls
  • Manage leadership pipeline list
  • Schedule and staff committee calls
  • Manage annual membership nomination process
  • Development Committee :
  • Manage schedule of calls / meetings and agendas
  • Support data and tracking of board participation
  • Help with scheduling and staffing of committee calls
  • Strategic Plan Committee :
  • Manage schedule of calls / meetings and agendas
  • Manage follow-up from meetings
  • Manage, organize and execute the annual orientation process and program for new board members in conjunction with the Dean, Associate Dean of External Affairs and Director of Constituent Engagement.
  • Manage, organize and execute the Board Engagement Plan program that offers annual meetings with each board member by the Associate Dean of External Affairs and the Director of Constituent Engagement.

Second Decade Society Committee :

Staff and provide support to three main committees of the Second Decade Society : Leadership, Philanthropy, and Engagement (LPE);

Career, Mentorship, and Professional Development; and, Student Awards

  • Schedule and attend monthly meetings, coordinating participation from appropriate student-facing departments and partners including the Life Design Lab
  • Work with the Assistant Director of Constituent Engagement to identify and execute committee activities including alumni-student panels and student mentoring events
  • Work with the Associate Director of Development and Volunteer Leadership to identify succession planning for board leadership with focus on committee leadership
  • In partnership with LPE leadership, serve as key staff for recruiting and onboarding process of potential and new SDS members
  • Manage, and attend where appropriate, peer-to-peer vetting calls
  • Manage pipeline list for current and potential SDS members including meeting with members to discuss future plans

Other Responsibilities (10%) :

  • Represent, manage and support KSAS activities at Leadership Weekend, Volunteer Leadership Summit, Reunion Weekend, Young Alumni Weekend, in person and virtual committee meetings, and provide staff support as needed to the members of all KSAS boards and councils.
  • Conduct annual visits with prospective donors, volunteers and friends of the Krieger School to explore opportunities for future volunteer engagement opportunities.

These may also be joint visits that include top volunteers to maintain and develop important relationships.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Three years related experience, with at least two years of professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years related experience, preferably including fundraising and / or alumni relations and board management related activities.
  • Experience in volunteer and board management, alumni relations, events, fundraising or related field, preferably in an institution of higher education.
  • Expertise in MS Office Suite skills especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with prospect management databases.
  • Strategic thinker able to navigate complex relationships.
  • Strong communicator able to adapt to diverse audiences.
  • Able to collaborate across many levels of an organization to achieve goals.
  • A high degree of professionalism, discretion, diplomacy and a high level of confidentiality.
  • This position requires a high level of independent judgment and decision-making.
  • Requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, a proactive work style, flexibility, attention to detail, entrepreneurial and creative nature.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and effectively in a fast-paced and complex environment.

  • The incumbent will be trained in the use of the JHU development database.

Total Rewards

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins Universitys salary range for this position.

Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education / training and other qualifications.

Education and Experience Equivalency

Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines : JHU Equivalency Formula : 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.

Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education / experience required for the respective job.
