Definition of Classification :
The Athletic Facilities Supervisor assesses each facility, plans, and coordinates the maintenance and turf management needs for all outdoor athletic venues, including the aquatic center.
Initiates an ongoing maintenance, renovation, and turf management plan, coordinates and administers maintenance, and evaluates outcomes for all outdoor athletic venues.
Maintains and prepares all outdoor athletic venues for practices, contests, and events, and ensures athletic venues are cleaned and prepared appropriately for their next use.
Oversees the ongoing maintenance and daily chemical management of the aquatic center. Oversees the regular maintenance, service, and repairs of all equipment utilized by the athletic facilities maintenance crew.
Reporting to the Director of Athletics, this position provides leadership for the athletic facilities maintenance crew.
This position requires flexibility to work evening and weekend hours as well as the ability to travel, as required.
Duties and Responsibilities :
The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following :
- Maintains athletic playing fields and competitive areas in optimal condition for practices and contests; coordinates pre-contest preparations and post-use clean-up of facilities following practices, contests, and events.
- Works with athletics facilities maintenance staff to paint and mark all fields as per NCAA rules of all competitions; provides set-up and take down of facilities for contests and events, including field equipment, goal posts, track & field pits and cages, dugouts, bench areas, press box, etc.
- Provides oversight and coordination of the scheduling of University athletic facilities for intercollegiate practices and contests as well as contract use agreements and rentals by community groups.
- In conjunction with the Director of Athletics, facilitates the scheduling of Event Services requesting use of athletic facilities;
assists the members of the Event Services staff as needed and facilitates communication between groups scheduling programs and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Responsible for the oversight and maintenance of the landscaping surrounding Brockton Avenue athletic facilities as well as the aquatic center.
This may include, but not be limited to, trimming of trees, shrubs, and hedges as well as planting, pruning, spraying, fertilizing, and weeding of planter boxes in all athletic venues.
- Monitors and inspects all areas, and acts on maintenance and safety concerns; may assist with construction projects as assigned.
- Provides dirt management to baseball and softball fields, including infield skin, baselines, warning tracks, pitching mounds / circle, and home plate.
This includes but is not limited to regular dragging, screen drag, rolling, and moisture control of the infield dirt.
- Provides leadership for other full-time positions assigned to athletic facilities maintenance crew.
- Provides support to the Pool Maintenance Technician, who is a member of the athletic facilities maintenance crew.
- Supervises, plans, directs, and assigns work of assigned staff; makes hiring and disciplinary decisions; provides feedback on performance and approve timesheets.
- Adheres to all safety and housekeeping policies and procedures.
- Contributes to the team effort by accomplishing related duties as needed.
- Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualification Guidelines
Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following :
Experience / Training / Education :
Required
- A high school diploma or equivalent supplemented with two (2) years of additional course work or training in areas of turf management, irrigation systems, and pesticides.
- Five (5) years of related experience in a similar position, with a minimum of one (1) year in a supervisory capacity.
- Preference will be given to candidates who also have commercial pool maintenance experience.
- A valid California Class C CA drivers’ license with a good driving record is required. Note : Out-of-state licenses are valid until appointment.
A valid California Class C driver’s license must be obtained within ten (10) days of appointment (in accordance with CA Vehicle Code 12505c).
Note : A physical examination demonstrating physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
Knowledge and Skills :
- Knowledge of commercial lawn and landscaping maintenance techniques, methods, material, and equipment.
- Safety rules, regulations, and procedure for ground maintenance.
- Ability to safely operate and maintain all lawn and landscape maintenance equipment and document any issues.
- Communicate effectively and follow instructions, both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

This is primarily a heavy work classification with employees working in an outdoor environment, moving around campus with frequent exposure to inclement weather.
This position requires flexibility to work evening and weekend hours as well as the ability to travel, as required.
