Position Overview

The Plumbing Designer II will apply their technical skills and professional competency in system design and construction for the disciplines of plumbing piping systems for a range of medium to large-scale projects.

This individual should have a solid understanding of the consulting engineering process and be well versed with coordinating design with mechanical and electrical disciplines.

Responsibilities

• Determine the scope of assigned plumbing project, review and interpret construction documents, and utilize software programs to create the engineering designs based on the interpretation of project plans and submittals / specifications of contract documents
• Determine cost-effective system layouts, quantities / sizes (pipe sizing), and specifications; select and schedule equipment with limited oversight
• Perform calculations for plumbing domestic water, storm, and sanitary pipes
• Verify code compliance of the system designs
• Provide engineering documents of gravity and pressure plumbing piping systems from start to finish
• Perform construction administration tasks including, but not limited to, site observations, studies, analyses, shop drawing review, and preparation of punch lists
• Preparation and layout of BIM drawings and coordination with all other disciplines at all phases of project production, including schematic design, design development, permitting, and construction documents phases
• Maintain excellent business relationships and communication with clients, partners, architects, owners, other design and construction professionals, and various code officials regarding the overall engineering project, associated assignments, and action items
• Miscellaneous duties, as assigned

Qualifications

• Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States
• High school diploma or GED; college degree in related field preferred
• At least 4 years of experience in plumbing engineering design of commercial buildings preferably in aviation, higher education, health care, hospitality, entertainment, and governmental facilities
• Certified Plumbing Designer (CPD) accreditation through the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) preferred
• Prior fire protection design experience preferred
• At least 2 years of experience coordinating with multi-discipline engineering teams
• Experience with a variety of project deliverable methods including design-build, design-bid-construct, fast-track and other construction delivery methods
• Knowledge of local, state, and national codes, including other aspects of laws, regulations, and potential liabilities affecting the practice of engineering
• Revit MEP proficiency required, and familiarity with other engineering software programs
• Highly proficient technical / computer skills including Microsoft O365 (Outlook, Work, Excel), internet and web applications
• Knowledge of plumbing domestic water, storm, and sanitary calculations, as well as experience in pipe sizing, layout, and design for plumbing systems
• Ability to prepare original specifications for project systems and components, as well as complete project manuals with sub-consultant specifications
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills; ability to clearly convey information, ideas, and concepts verbally, written, or in graphic form
• Must have the technical knowledge and hands-on experience to effectively evaluate various mechanical engineering options for configuration of equipment and components
• Experience with cost containment and reduction approaches

Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to perform the necessary job-related functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

• Travel up to 10 20% for site investigations and assessments, or client meetings
• Remain in a stationary position, often standing or sitting, for prolonged periods
• Work extended hours, evenings and weekends when necessary to meet business deadlines
• Regular use of office equipment such as a computer / laptop and computer screens
• Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse and other computer components
• Ability to see differences between colors, shades and brightness
• Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships)
• May occasionally be exposed to the following work conditions : work near / with moving mechanical parts; work near / with electrical currents;
