Job Summary

Applies professional concepts to conduct analytical studies or projects of moderate scope and complexity to address a variety of policy, research and procedural issues.

Fully analyzes issues and problems, gathers data and information, finds and evaluates alternatives and makes sound recommendations.

The Project Manager / Research Assistant works with CLIIR faculty and staff as well as collaborates closely with external researchers and clinical and business stakeholders within the UCSF Health system that partner on CLIIR projects.

The Project Manager / Research Assistant conducts qualitative and quantitative research and provides project management, analytical and administrative support for projects that advance the use of digital health for applied clinical informatics research.

Key tasks include project management / coordination including meeting scheduling, taking meeting notes including capturing next steps, creating / managing timelines and project plans, and creating / maintaining project documentation.

The individual is also responsible for specific project-related work including writing interview guides, conducting interviews, developing surveys, tracking responses, writing reports, performing literature searches, proofreading papers, and managing references.

The individual works with quantitative data including basic data analysis, data validation and data cleaning. Administrative tasks such as creating purchase orders and submitting invoices are also required as well as creating / maintaining tracking documents for the team including tracking compliance (i.

e. Institutional Review Board - IRB submissions, trainings) and grant deadlines.

Second, our faculty publishes its work in peer-reviewed journals and would provide a Project Manager / Research Assistant with authorship on publications, should they meet standard contribution criteria.

Finally, the work of a Project Manager / Research Assistant directly contributes to improving clinical care for patients at UCSF and across the US healthcare system.

They will be encouraged to take advantage of training and learning opportunities within the Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute, the Institute for Health Policy Studies (IHPS) and other related entities.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF.

For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $55,700 - $90,000 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Division of Clinical Informatics and Digital Transformation (DoC-IT) serves as the academic home for applied clinical informatics researchers within the UCSF Department of Medicine.

DoC-IT also serves as a coordinating entity with key internal and external digital stakeholders across all UCSF mission areas, schools, departments, and divisions.

DoC-IT is the primary home of the Center for Clinical Informatics and Improvement Research (CLIIR), which launched in 2017 at UCSF and was created out of a critical need to understand how to use digital tools to improve quality and value.

CLIIR's mission is to discover ways : (1) to leverage Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and other sources of digital data to improve clinical performance and healthcare value, and (2) to scale these results to promote healthcare transformation.

The Center has close ties to IHPS, the Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute, and other digital health initiatives at UCSF.

The Division is also the home of UCSF's Clinical Informatics Fellowship, and partners with other UCSF entities to develop new education and training programs.

Lastly, DoC-IT forges novel partnerships with UCSF health systems, other UCSF affiliates, and industry partners to ensure that our research has real-world impact.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related field (public health, health policy, health informatics, etc.) and one or more years of relevant experience and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Working knowledge of common organization- or research-specific and other computer application programs (MS Office Suite, reference management software, project management software)
  • Proficient in communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Proficient in ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality
  • Demonstrates ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns
  • Proficient in ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes
  • Working knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with at least one statistical software package such as R, Python, SAS, Stata or SPSS
  • Working knowledge of clinical information systems and their role in healthcare delivery organizations
  • Proficient in academic / peer-reviewed literature search techniques, review / abstraction of academic papers, and literature synthesis
  • Familiarity with clinical data
  • Familiar with developing / programming surveys in online survey tools such as Qualtrics
