Position Description :

The Eppley Center for Parks and Public Lands is one of seven centers at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community (IIDC).

The Eppley Center is a statewide and national resource on matters related to parks, recreation and public lands management including service to local, state and national organizations responsible for stewardship of, and providing park, public land, tourism and recreation opportunities to society.

Founded in 1993, Eppley serves as a widely respected statewide, national, and international resource that provides training and learning design, research, planning, and accessibility guidance to parks and public land agencies with a focus on up to date and practical solutions for interpreting park resources, enhancing visitor experience, and managing facilities, natural resources, and cultural assets.

Eppley strives to promote and support physical and programmatic access for all, including people with disabilities.

  • The Director will be responsible for developing and implementing an annual work plan to develop a program that includes : 1) mission driven externally funded projects, initiatives, and research;
  • 2) service to the profession through revenue producing program activities, 3) enhanced collaborative initiatives with IIDC programs and centers;

4) dissemination and outreach; and 5) developing new external sources of funding.This is a twelve-month, non-tenure track, academic position.

Duties and responsibilities :

1. Lead and manage a highly active, team environment to implement a diverse portfolio of work that includes but is not limited to creating agency master plans of park systems, management consulting, training and policy development.

2. Seek, obtain, and ensure continued external funding of the many programs and projects by ensuring high quality service to partners, continuing relationships and new partner and project funding is assured for future years by obtaining contracts / grants funding from various partner agencies and organizations to fund Eppley Center operations and complete contracts / grants as required.

3. Coordinate and manage all related external funds awarded to the center (e.g., state and federal grants).4. Author professional reports, policy briefs, research translation materials, and academic publications.

5. Disseminate products and results via multiple venues, including conferences, webinars, online media, etc.6. Maintain an ongoing affiliation with local, state, and national professionals related to parks and public lands.

7. Serve on the IIDC Leadership Team and participate in management meetings and activities of the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community.

8. Connect programmatic activities to support the missions of the IIDC and Indiana University. 9. Travel, including some weekends and occasional weeklong trips to partner locations.

10. Other duties as assigned.11. Those at the rank of Research Scientist will be expected to intellectually lead, maintain and manage an active research and evaluation program, including publishing and presenting research findings via various outlets, seeking extramural funding, and applying findings to community settings.

Basic Qualifications Requirements : 1. Demonstrated ability to manage diverse project, including externally funded initiatives, training programs, and technical assistance activities.

2. Experience designing and developing public sector park systems, recreation facility and park site plans. Experience managing parks and public lands areas including research, public engagement, supervision and training.

3. Significant experience in working with national and / or state agencies focusing on park, recreation and public lands issues with emphasis on training, education, policy development, research / evaluation, technical assistance, and planning.

4. Excellent writing and communication skills required. Experience working with teams and outside partner agencies desired.

5. Education and Experience : a. Preferred : PhD in park, recreation or public lands management (or related field) with at least 3 years of experience in parks related project management, grants and project funding.

Candidates with a PhD should have a proven track record of research, publications, and / or relevant industry contributions.

b. Considered : Candidates without a PhD will also be considered if they possess substantial experience in parks and recreation fields.

Such candidates should have 5+ years of relevant experience, demonstrating expertise through significant achievements, leadership roles, and contributions to projects or initiatives within the industry.

6. Knowledge of park management theory, human resource management, design and planning of park and recreation areas, training, education, organization development and public governance strongly desired.
