Position Summary : The Director of Program Underwriting will coordinate and lead a team to accomplish their responsibilities, goals, and key initiatives and mentor staff.
The director will support underwriting staff to support and contribute to the underwriting of a profitable and risk adverse portfolio through effective communication and decision-making.
Additionally, the position will assist with business development and growth by building and maintaining positive relationships with partners and insurance applicants.
This leader will be a valuable contributor to the VGM Insurance management team and will play a key role in our success.

Responsibilities / Duties of the Job
Underwriting Management Primary responsibility is to evaluate and underwrite insurance applications submitted by agents, brokers, or customers.
You will analyze various factors, such as risk exposure, financial stability, and claims history to make informed decisions about accepting or rejecting insurance applications.
Your goal is to ensure profitable underwriting outcomes while maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction.
- Underwriting Analysis - Review insurance applications and accompanying documents to assess risk factors, determine the insurability of the applicant, and evaluate appropriate policy terms and pricing.
- Risk Evaluation - Analyze information provided by applicants, such as financial statements, loss history, and other relevant data, to evaluate potential risks and determine appropriate coverage levels.
- Communication - Interact with agents, brokers, or customers to gather additional information, clarify underwriting requirements, and provide explanations for underwriting decisions.
- Underwriting Guidelines - Adhere to established underwriting guidelines, policies, and procedures to maintain consistency and minimize risk exposure.
- Decision Making - Evaluate complex underwriting scenarios, including exceptions or deviations from standard guidelines, and make sound decisions based on risk assessment and company objectives.
- Risk Mitigation - Identify and recommend risk mitigation strategies or policy endorsements to minimize potential losses for both the insured and the company.
- Market Analysis - Stay updated on industry trends, market conditions, and regulatory changes that may impact underwriting decisions or processes.
- Relationship Management - Build and maintain strong relationships with agents, brokers, or customers to foster collaboration, address inquiries, and ensure customer satisfaction.
- Documentation - Maintain accurate and comprehensive underwriting files, including policy records, correspondence, and other relevant documents.
Employee relations Manage direct staff performance and overall organizational health
- Manage and develop staff; creating and implementing processes to enhance cross-divisional integration
- Maintain a positive, results oriented work environment, building partnerships and modelling teamwork, communicating to others in an open, balanced, and objective manner
- Translate company business strategy into operational goals with visible metrics
- Perform annual performance appraisals / reviews and effectively manage personnel issues
- Meet regularly with team to discuss current projects and issues
Strategic Planning - Based on the objectives provided by the President, facilitate business planning, strategy, and optimization.
- Maintain relationships with members / insureds, consultants, vendors, and other industry partners, advisors, and VGM cross-divisional peers.
- Attend trade shows and other special events, as needed.
- Make recommendations and strategize with the management team regarding challenges and new business opportunities.
- Work closely with the other members of the VGM Insurance management team
Position Qualifications
Education / Experience
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in underwriting and servicing the insurance needs of clients
- Multiline underwriting Property and Casualty experience preferred
- CPCU, CIC, RPLU, CPL AU-M, ARe designation preferred but not required
- Bachelor’s degree in business related field, or equivalent education and / or experience
Skills and competencies
- Experience or familiarity with state filings of forms and programs
- MGA Experience preferred but not required
- Experience in or coursework in reinsurance preferred
- Demonstrated ability to instill confidence and comfort with clients
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Proven attention to detail, follow-through skills, and problem-solving skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills to prioritize heavy workloads to meet time sensitive deadlines
- Ability to interact well with others
Physical Requirements
- Work in front of a computer for long amounts of time
- Using technology efficiently such as computers, phones, misc. office equipment
- Occasional travel to VGM offices, customers or training when required
