We are seeking a Senior Financial Analyst who will be responsible for assisting the Sr. Finance Manager of Auxiliaries in the management of all financial functions for the Auxiliary Services of University Student Services.

This includes drafting (on a GAAP and a modified cash basis) quarterly projections and budgets and preparing related variance analysis for review by the Sr.

Financial Manager and the Associate Director. The incumbent will be responsible for creating and / or updating financial models and scenarios, housing and meal plan enrollment projections and allocations, and assisting with all financial processes, including but not limited to annual budget preparation for all auxiliary functions and year-end closing.

This position will support operations funded by undergraduate room and board rates, including dormitory facilities, resident life, community living, off-campus housing, in-house dining operations, conference and event services, and property lease and rental income.

Dollars under management are $68 Million.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Develop and analyze complex financial data and reports; identify relevant information, trends, and discrepancies from approved budgets;

interpret data to determine past financial performance and project a financial position, prepare written analysis to tell the financial story to USS and University Finance Leaders.

  • Locate and compile information and format reports, graphs, tables, records, and other sources of information.
  • Use various software applications, such as spreadsheets and word processing, to assemble, manipulate, and format data and / or reports.
  • Routinely assists with the daily financial operations; assists with the development of annual operating budgets, fiscal year-end closing, and preparing the five-year plan and presentation materials for budget meetings.
  • Assist Auxiliary Services managers and staff with budget projections and processing issues and serve as liaison between business offices and managers;

inform and communicate financial problems and issues to the Senior Finance Manager and report on the status of current and pending issues.

  • Oversee administration of confidential staff and student payroll, including coordinating annual increases with department managers and supervisors, developing salary planning scenarios, forecasting annual salary expenditures, and identifying and explaining variances from budget.
  • Interpret and analyze monthly financial statements, all phases of monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting closing processes, and student billing analysis.
  • Identify negative variances; seek and propose resolutions of negative variances and deficit balances.
  • Ensure all financial activities adhere to the University’s financial policies and advise the school’s stakeholders on the accuracy of actual spending compared to their respective budgets and projections.
  • Establish effective working relationships with internal and external partner departments, resolve short-term issues, recognize long-term initiatives, and ensuring established procedures are followed.
  • Provide guidance / training of Finance processes to internal and external departments as needed.
  • Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities

  • Extract financial data from SAP and Oracle to perform expense / revenue projections on both GAAP and modified cash basis and for quarterly reporting to USS Division and University Finance leaders.
  • Interpret and analyze financial data in order to convey the financial story to USS and university leadership, including the University Budget Office.
  • Monitor expenditures throughout Auxiliary Services, perform budget analysis, and perform monthly account reconciliation reviews independently and accurately to ensure they comply with university policies.
  • Develop / update detailed financial models for annual budgeting, projections, and reporting.
  • Support year-end closing of the Auxiliary operations books to support roll-up to the Divisional and University financial statements.
  • Support the development of room rates for on-campus undergraduate housing as well as rates for dining plans.
  • Prepare weekly, monthly, and quarterly financial reports for six self-operated dining locations and four vendor-operated locations for use by location managers.
  • Participate in the capital projects budget and projections processes, monitor and report on expenditures, and support financial administration of new projects.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of budgeting processes, financial reporting and controls, financial analysis, administration, fiscal planning and management, and payroll management.
  • Demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a particular attention to detail.
  • Must have the ability to exercise independent judgment to solve problems, meet deadlines, and manage broad functional areas.
  • Demonstrate ability to manage major long- and short-term projects from infancy to successful conclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including an advanced ability in financial writing with staff and senior leadership.
  • Must be collaborative with excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of data and information.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or a related field.
  • Five years of related financial / accounting and financial management experience, e.g., planning, directing, monitoring, organizing, and controlling the monetary resources of a department, center, or unit.
  • Additional education (master's in a related field) may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Auxiliary operations, dining or rental real estate operations strongly preferred.
  • SAP and Oracle experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge and advanced proficiency in the use of financial software applications, including Microsoft Office suite, particularly proficiency in Excel, and Smart View reporting tool.
