These positions all support ongoing, funded lab- and field-based geologic research with Freeport-McMoRan. Lab work focuses on analytical mineralogical and geochemical studies of Freeport-derived samples and performed in UA labs, primarily in the Department of Geosciences.

Field work includes geologic mapping and core logging to characterize mineral deposits and will be undertaken at Freeport-McMoRan sites in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico.

Duties & Responsibilities

Working with lab manager(s) and / or faculty, acquire and develop skills in one or more of the following analytical techniques while working to characterize geological materials related to the Freeport and affiliated projects.

This can include : (1) sample preparation for analysis using standard techniques; (2) perform characterization of spectra, identification of minerals and related substances using VNIR, SWIR, M / LWIR, and Raman spectroscopy, (3) develop and apply laser ablation and related inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry to the chemical and isotopic characterization of minerals;

4) interpret results in the context of broader project goals and in collaboration with senior personnel. (Communicate results - #3 below)

Working with Freeport personnel and / or faculty perform geologic mapping and / or core logging in key mineralized areas in Arizona and / or New Mexico.

In collaboration with Freeport personnel and following appropriate MSHA safety training and certification, this can include : (1) detailed logging, field-based analysis, and sampling of diamond drill core using appropriate

industry-standard methods (eg, "Anaconda" style); (2) undertake selected field-based geologic mapping of surface or mine exposures to record key features including lithology, structure, alteration, and veining (also using "Anaconda" or similar approaches);

3) compile and interpret results in the context of broader project goals and in collaboration with senior personnel.

Report regularly via oral and written modes on results and recommendations for next steps to immediate supervisors and faculty PIs.

Provide first-order interpretation of results and accessible (electronic) summaries.

KSA :

The employee must be able to work collaboratively in a multi-person, demanding environment whether lab- or field-based. Strong geologic observation skills including mineral and rock identification are essential.

Familiarity with basic geochemical / mineralogical characterization approaches is important. Ability to work independently following appropriate guidance is also essential.

Familiarity with basic tools and safety principles is expected at the beginning but will be enhanced by additional training as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
  • 1 year of relevant work experience
  • Experience with laboratory and field techniques in geology is required.
