Opto-Mechanical Engineer
Our client is seeking an Optical / Opto-Mechanical Engineer to join their space technology company that is focused on providing in-space servicing solutions for governments and businesses.

As an Optical / Opto-Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for developing novel optical sensing instruments for space and earth environments, combining knowledge of optical systems including imagers, spectrometers, lasers, and other illumination and detection systems.
You will also advance applied research programs that are synergistic with the mission of the company to develop cutting-edge solutions in sensing applications.
Responsibilities :
- Develop novel optical sensing instruments for space and earth environments, combining knowledge of optical systems including imagers, spectrometers, lasers, and other illumination and detection systems.
- Advance applied research programs that are synergistic with the mission of the company to develop cutting-edge solutions in sensing applications.
- Own the design of the optical system payload for the space environment.
- Design, fabrication, and validation of opto-mechanical components for VIS and near-infrared applications.
- Design, fabrication, and validation of opto-mechanical components and EMCCD camera control systems.
- Demonstrate domain expertise in at least one of these areas : object detection & tracking, pose estimation, depth estimation, semantic & instance segmentation, video models, differentiable rendering, Neural Radiance Field (NeRF), 3D reconstruction, visual SLAM, structure from motion.
- Interface with optical, mechanical, and electrical engineering teams to complete systems modelling, analysis, and methods of performance validation.
Requirements :
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g. engineering, physics, mathematics, or computer science) with at least 5 years of experience.
- Desired Qualification in Optical / Aerospace / Mechanical / Electrical Engineering or equivalent engineering / science discipline at a bachelor's level or Advanced degree.
- At least 4 years of experience in aerospace optical engineering in space applications.
- Expertise in diffraction limited optical designs, narrowband filtering, and thermal optical designs.
- Knowledge of acceptance testing of optics and sensors in an optics lab.
- Experience in optical design tools (Zemax, CODE V, others), assembly, and testing.
- 5+ years of experience in a relevant scientific field (lab experience required).
- 3+ years of experience in Systems Engineering of hardware systems proficient with a variety of computer-aided design, analysis, and control.
Desirable :
- Experience with high-powered laser optics.
- Space optical payload development experience.
- An understanding of the design challenges of instruments operating under severe environmental conditions.
- Experienced in the use of industry-standard optical design tools (e.g. CodeV, Zemax, ASAP).
- Experience with stray-light optical design and analysis tools.
- Experience with ANSYS Mechanical, STK.
- Experience with CAD tools such as SolidWorks or equivalent.
