JOB DESCRIPTION : To ensure the safety of children on the school bus by monitoring behavior, securing at-risk students, and identifying safety hazards.

QUALIFICATIONS : High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

The ability to read and write in order to communicate and receive instruction. The ability to speak polite English in order to communicate and receive instruction.

REQUIREMENTS :

  • Minimum age requirement of 21 years old
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Certification
  • Must submit and pass a biennial Physical Performance Test
  • Must submit to drug and alcohol drug screening in accordance with federal laws and Governing Board policies.
  • The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands : significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and / or pulling, some climbing and balancing, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and / or crawling, grasping, walking, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and significant fine finger dexterity.

Generally, the job requires sitting, walking, and standing. The job requires up to 60 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently, and / or up to ten (10) pounds of force constantly to move objects.

The job is performed under extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions, intense noise, travel, chemicals, odors, blood, and other bodily fluids, and under conditions with exposure to the risk of injury and / or illness.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Monitors students embarking and disembarking the school bus well as, onboard the school bus to ensure appropriate behavior and the removal of safety hazards, which includes : securing students who require car seats, booster seats, seat belts, safety vests, or other restraints securely into the bus seat, escorting those students who need a hand to hand delivery to an adult at the stops, monitoring behaviors, enforcing school bus rules and policies, intervening and de-escalating fights, and performing other related activities.
  • Attends minor medical needs and basic first aid for students on the bus.
  • Reports violations of student behavior to the driver; alerts driver of incidents requiring emergency response or assistance.

Reports all incidents to the Director of Transportation.

  • Responsible for :
  • Assisting students embarking and disembarking the school bus.
  • Seating children in assigned locations on the bus.
  • Assists drivers in the loading and unloading of wheelchair-bound students.
  • Assist students in following the driver’s instructions.
  • Closely supervising medically fragile special education students.
  • Maintaining hygiene needs for special education students.
  • Ability to maneuver physically disabled students.
  • Assists the drivers in maintaining accurate records of all bus riders and student attendance.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of all student records.
  • Familiar and able to assist in evacuating a school bus.
  • Assist drivers in conducting pre / post trips.
  • Assist drivers in maintaining the cleanliness of the school bus and equipment.
  • Working under limited supervision following standardized practices and / or methods; providing information and / or advising others;

operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS :

  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, state, county, and city statutes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable Alhambra Elementary School District and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Safety procedures and guidelines
  • Monitoring and redirecting children
  • Using equipment such as first aid kits, 2-way radios (including hand-helds), cleaning equipment, and other related items.
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, the supervisor, the general public, etc.

SALARY : Full-Time ten and a half-month position, beginning salary Level BA / T, employee benefits in accordance with Board Policies.

EVALUATION : Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Board Policy on the evaluation of support personnel.
