Job Role Summary

The Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator performs all functions of Staff Nurse II, providing professional nursing care to patients.

This position functions independently, demonstrating superior problem-solving, decision-making and critical thinking skills.

This position acts as a resource for unit / area emergencies, disaster management or other emergent situations by responding, facilitating communication and resources with management / administrative support.

This may include responding to codes, disasters or other identified high acuity events.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health's mission : Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County.

  • Performs all functions of Staff Nurse II, providing professional nursing care to patients. Functions independently, demonstrating superior problem-solving, decision-making and critical thinking skills
  • Provides direct patient care as needed. Is a technical expert and resources with the trauma patient population or is able to provide access to expert care as needed
  • Functions as a clinical expert, clinical consultant and resource to nursing unit staff to facilitate consistent quality patient care
  • Facilitates efficient patient throughput, which includes appropriate bed placement based on diagnosis, acuity and staffing requirements in collaboration with staffing coordination
  • Functions as a clinical coach, serves as a resource for other clinical coaches and area preceptors. Participates in planning and implementation of orientation, education and development of staff
  • Serves as a resource and instructor for trauma education offerings
  • Supports consistent regulatory readiness for unit / area via rounding, counseling / coaching and monitoring. Is aware of standards and regulations applicable to clinical unit
  • Acts as a resource for unit / area emergencies, disaster management or other emergent situations by responding, facilitating communication and resources with management / administrative support.

This may include responding to codes, disasters or other identified high acuity events

  • Participates in the evaluation of staff by providing input, supporting development and coaching and counseling of staff
  • Provides direct patient care of the trauma patient in the Emergency Department upon all trauma activations while in-house.

Assists with documentation of Trauma Flowsheet to assure physician response times and patient assessments are recorded appropriately

  • Assists in the preparation for verification site visit process, and is knowledgeable regarding the Resources for Optimal Care of the Trauma Patient book provided by the American College of Surgeons
  • Coordinates special programs within area of expertise as delegated
  • Coordinates performance improvement activities with direction. Initiates processes to resolve clinical problems, PI projects with direction including documentation compliance, death reviews, complication reviews, transfers and trauma registry data validation
  • Monitors, adherence to protocols, and variances
  • Assists the Trauma Program Manager in the development, implementation and evaluation of a quality plan, which is multidisciplinary and patient outcome focused
  • Maintains current working knowledge of external and internal quality indicators and standards as it pertains to the trauma patient
  • Assists Trauma Coding Analyst with medical record data extrapolation for the Trauma Registry and has a fundamental understanding of trauma data systems
  • Participates in the Brief Alcohol Screening Program

Job Requirements

  • Active RN license in the State of Indiana, or the ability to obtain active licensure through application
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred
  • CPR, ACLS, ENCP, TNCC certification
  • Instructor status in TNCC is preferred
  • TCRN, CEN or CCRN current or within 2 years of hire date
  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical nursing experience as a registered nurse
