Medical Assistant, School Based

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES : Under the clinical supervision of a licensed provider, the School Based Medical Assistant will assist in performing various types of medical and laboratory procedures, as well as provide clerical support to MCHC staff delivering health services.

The School Based Medical Assistant will work as a member of the care team with ongoing interaction of team members to discuss roles, responsibilities, communication and patient care coordination.

The care team will work together to provide and enhance the care provided by the practice. Compiles and enters program / billing data.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

• Ensure accurate and complete medical records, obtain necessary information for preparing new records, ascertain insurance information, filing, and maintain confidentiality of all records, including clinical test results.
• Prepare clients for examination, take routine vital signs and standard growth / development measurements. Assist with clinical procedures. Document in EHR.
• Perform laboratory procedures, phlebotomy, urine dipsticks, specimen collection, labeling, pregnancy testing and venipuncture.
• Perform CLIA waived testing.
• Perform expanded duties, including medication refills, administering immunizations / injections, obtaining cultures, removing sutures, EKG or other procedural assistance requested by medical provider.
• Maintain cleanliness of client care units, equipment and work areas and assure areas are adequately supplied.
• Compile patient census data and prepare various administrative reports as assigned.
• Maintain good infection control practices.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES :

• Provide clerical / receptionist support, including to greet clients and visitors as they enter the clinic.
• Provide client orientation, schedule / confirms appointments and process clients for MCHC providers and / or contracted health services.
• Answer multi-line phone system, screen calls and direct calls / messages as appropriate.
• Prepare client records utilizing department guidelines and update consent forms, insurance information and demographic information regularly.
• Pull, prepare, and review client records to assure that information in the record matches information in department database, making corrections when necessary.
• Performs clerical duties, data entry, statistical reporting, word processing, photocopying, and ordering supplies as requested.
• Coordinate follow up care for children seen in ER / urgent care per established CAH / P guidelines.
• Order necessary supplies for the clinic and / or department health services.
• Participate in chart reviews and other Quality Improvement Projects.
• Other job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS :

Required Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program.
• Current CPR certification.
• Intermediate computer skills with EHR / EMR / EDR / EPM software.
• Basic computer skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access and Adobe Acrobat.
• The ability to understand and execute both oral and written orders.
• Must have communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with administration, associates, principals, counselors, teachers, community agency personnel, clients, and visitors.
• Must have a reliable vehicle, a valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record and a minimum of $100,000 / $300,000 insurance coverage or available transportation to travel for the purposes of required Health Center business if assigned to school-based / community program.

Preferred Qualifications

• Current certification through one of the following credentialing agencies is preferred :

• Certified Clinical Medical Assistant CCMA National Healthcareer Association NHA
• National Certified Medical Assistant NCMA National Center for Competency Testing NCCT
• Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant NRCMA National Association for Health Professionals NAHP
• Registered Medical Assistant(AAH) RMA(AAH) American Allied Health AAH
• One year of outpatient health care experience in pediatrics / adolescents
• Working knowledge of eClinicalWorks
