Chief Scientific Officer, Sleep and Metabolism Laboratory

The Department of Health and Exercise Science, Sleep and Metabolism ( SAM ) Laboratory seeks to identify a Chief Scientific Officer ( CSO ) to play a pivotal role in driving the scientific vision and strategic direction of the SAM Lab at Colorado State University ( CSU ).

This novel position is designed to support the continued growth of a nationally recognized research program and enhance its scale and operational efficiency.

The CSO will operate under the authority of the Director and Chief Executive Officer ( CEO ) of the SAM Laboratory (Josiane Broussard, and will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer ( COO ), Chief of Staff ( CoS ), as well as other stakeholders to ensure alignment of the SAM Lab objectives with the broader mission of CSU.

The SAM Lab specializes in the role of sleep and circadian regulation in metabolic and cardiovascular homeostasis. The SAM Lab aims to understand how sleep and circadian disruption impair whole body and tissue-specific function, and whether improving the timing of behaviors such as sleep, exercise and eating can improve health and reduce disease risk.

The CSO will have the opportunity to shape the future direction of the SAM Lab and contribute to advancing knowledge and innovation in sleep and circadian science.

Required Job Qualifications or equivalent degree in human physiology or related field.

  • 3+ years of post-doctoral experience
  • 5+ years of full-time professional experience in clinical research (includes post-doctoral experience).
  • Proven track record of research excellence and leadership in academia or industry as evidenced by successful grant applications and / or leadership positions held.
  • Analytical, statistical, and programming capabilities proficient in R, Python, SQL, SAS or related programs).
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and executing scientific strategies as evidenced by previous history designing and conducting clinical trials.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Prior experience in medical or scientific writing as evidenced by a track record of publications in scientific journals.
  • Prior experience as a faculty member.
  • Postdoctoral training specific to clinical sleep and circadian research.
  • Experience working with time series data.
  • Grant writing experience demonstrated by a history of extramural funding. Strong candidates will have successfully obtained and completed a major early to mid-career award NIH F32, K01, R03).
  • Knowledge of funding mechanisms available.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and ethical standards governing scientific research IRB, ICJME).
  • Experience in mentoring and supervising research personnel, including students and postdoctoral fellows.
  • Strict attention to detail.
  • Certifications in : Good Clinical Practice, Responsible Conduct of Research certification and Human Subjects Research.
  • Excellent time management skills with a demonstrated ability to establish priorities, manage shifting priorities, and handle numerous time-sensitive projects with multiple deadlines such as grant submission deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders as evidenced by a track record of professional research presentations.

  • Provide leadership in identifying emerging trends, technologies, and opportunities in the fields of sleep / circadian, exercise physiology, and nutrition.
  • Drive innovation by facilitating the translation of research findings into tangible products such as manuscripts, abstracts, and conference proceedings.

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students within the lab.

  • Ensure that research activities comply with relevant regulatory standards, safety protocols, and ethical guidelines.
