Duties

  • You will evaluate radiation survey data to determine radiation hazards and compliance with established radiation level requirements.
  • You will assist in inspections and surveillances of operations performed by other organizations to determine compliance with requirements promulgated by the Shipyard and higher authorities.
  • You will perform analyses to determine radionuclide identification and quantity in a variety of samples such as mud, water, air, waste material, work areas, and the human body.
  • You will identify program trends or causes which might affect dosimetry accuracy and recommend appropriate action to improve dosimetry accuracy based upon an evaluation of these program trends.
  • You will prepare and evaluate reports of investigations, analyses, and surveys to provide assessments, conclusions, and recommendations of program changes / modifications to fulfill the objectives of the Radiation Health Division.

  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals).

You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.

This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites.

You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic education requirements :

For the GS-07 : Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following : As a professional Health Physicist collecting hazardous samples and conducting radiological surveys to assist with the execution of radiological monitoring and surveying for an industrial radiological health program.

For the GS-05 : Applicants who meet the Basic Education Requirements for this position are fully qualified for the GS-05 grade level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).

Education

Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual :

Health Physics Series 1306 :

A) Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree in natural science or engineering. To be acceptable, the program must include at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and / or calculus.

B) Combination of education and experience courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.

For the GS-07 level only : Education may be substituted for specialized experience as follows :

Successful completion of one full year of graduate level education.

Successful completion of a bachelor's degree, with superior academic achievement, in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and / or calculus;

A combination of education and experience with courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described above.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
