The (WR) program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Central Region Well Construction Coordinator (Hydrogeologist 3) (in-Training) position.
This position is locatedin our Central Regional Office (CRO) in .
In this role, you will serve as the region’s technical expert on all well driller licensing and well construction issues, including those requiring complex hydrogeological evaluation.
You will have the opportunity to travel throughout many areas of Central Washington and to frequently work outside the office in the field.
This role will provide you with opportunities to be on site with water well construction contractors and to learn about the industry and the laws and rules that govern it.
You will independently plan, develop, direct, conduct, and / or oversee professional hydrogeological investigations involving well construction issues.
This is an In-Training position. The goal class for this position is a Hydrogeologist 3 (HG3). We will consider applicants who meet the requirements for the Hydrogeologist 2 and 3 levels.
If the finalist meets the requirements for the HG2 level, then they will be placed into a training program to become a HG3 within a specified period of time.

Duties
What makes this role unique?
In this role, you will become familiar with the basalt hydrogeology of the Yakima Fold Belt basalts and the aquifer management system that has been established by Ecology.
You will also have the opportunity to learn and understand the methods used to construct wells in the multi-aquifer basalt systems.
What you will do :
- Serve as a hydrogeologic and technical expert relating to well construction in Central Washington.
- Provide technical assistance to well drillers, well owners, government agencies and Ecology staff.
- Inspect wells and visit ongoing well construction activities to ensure compliance with state laws.
- Conduct, and oversee complex hydrogeologic investigations involving well construction issues and or to support water right permitting.
- Administer licensing tests for well contractors as needed.
Qualifications
Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time.
We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked.
Examples of the proration calculations are :
- 30 hours worked per week for 20 months : (30 / 40) x 20 months 15 months full-time equivalent
- 20 hours worked per week for 12 months : (20 / 40) x 12 months 6 months full-time equivalent
This is an In-Training position. The goal class for this position is a Hydrogeologist 3 (HG3). We will consider applicants who meet the requirements for the Hydrogeologist 2 and 3 levels.

Special Requirements / Conditions of Employment :
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- At the HG3 level : Must possess a Washington State Hydrogeology License.
Desired Qualifications :
Experience working around drilling rigs and in the drilling industry, including logging and oversight of well drilling operations.
