Accounts Payable Accountant

Under the direction of the Accounting Payable Supervisor, this position is responsible for maintaining a fiscal services system for state and federal grants, license revenues and donation accounts in which examining a variety of financial documents for completeness and accuracy, and conformance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
A Bachelor degree in accounting or a closely related field is required.
Job Duties :
Major responsibilities will include :
- Makes entries and revisions to the general ledger, monitors funds from state and federal grants for available funding for payments to vendors to assure that expenditures do not exceed funds available
- Reconciles reports from AZ360 and APP, which includes check requests; Inter-agency and intra-agency payment requests needed due to program area requests and monies owed
- Performs professional accounting work to support the Department’s mission and the expenditures of the Agency, including the wildlife, watercraft and off-highway vehicle resources of the State of Arizona and to all staff that contribute to the Department’s mission
- Makes payments to vendors using automated accounting systems, AZ360 and APP.
- Reviews that goods and / or services and invoices were received and verifies amounts to pay.
- Analyzes, prepares, and reconciles encumbrance and invoice payment reports to general ledger and assesses for accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards.
Reports variances to Accounting Supervisor and Accounting Manager.
Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) :
A Bachelor degree in accounting or a closely related field is required.
The candidate must have knowledge of / in : accounting principles, analyzing and preparing financial reports, GAAP, principles, concepts, practices, methods and techniques of government accounting, internal control structures and fiscal management, automated financial systems, reference materials such as federal regulations, Arizona Revised Statutes, applicable agency manuals, and policies and procedures, and financial research methodologies.
Candidate must be skilled in analysis, interpretation and communication of financial data, detailed work with accuracy and speed, perform accounting functions and broad administrative support functions, monitoring accounting requirements and deadlines, compose a wide variety of complex inquiries concerning the progress of accounting functions, and in take out in providing advice regarding proper procedures, respond to the Agency needs with tact, diplomacy and in an appropriate timely manner and strong interpersonal skills in responding to customer’s inquiries.

Pre-Employment Requirements :
A Bachelor degree in accounting or a closely related field is required.
Position requires possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment.
Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code .).
