As a professional level member of the Quality team with corporate level responsibilities, the Senior Packaging Quality Engineer will be accountable for assuring the continued quality of existing products with primary focus on packaging and blow molding activities.
Achieving this responsibility will be done by using Quality Planning Tools to lead the corrective and preventative action initiatives for the continuous improvement efforts on Consumables products.
Responsibilities
- Manages product quality reporting by :
- Providing regular quality reviews with Operations and Quality leadership on new and existing issues.
- Regularly informing the organization on quality performance against action plans with progress.
- Initiating and tracking corrective action requests for significant issues.
- Keeping the Quality manager informed of any discrepancies on any product which does not meet standards prior to being allowed for use in production.
- Providing continued direction for continuous improvement of internal manufacturing operations and quality systems.
- Reviews and approves all related Product Maintenance activities, such as :
- Material Specification releases and revisions, ensuring all appropriate control characteristics have been properly identified and committed to by the manufacturer.
- Engineering Change Requests, assessing impact on product quality and ensuring interchangeability and proper disposition of stock.
- Interacting with Product Development Packaging Engineers to ensure successful maintenance of products.
- Partnering with Design Quality Engineers to ensure successful launches of new products.
- Investigates customer complaints through :
- Root-cause analysis techniques and testing of returned products.
- Providing corrective action back to the initiator of the complaint.
- Monitoring product returns information, performing analysis of the data, and communicating requests for corrective action to appropriate parties.
- Partnering with Design Quality Engineers for review of data.
- New Supplier selection and approval :
- Working with cross-functional groups to identify potential new suppliers.
- Performing necessary assessments to determine suitability of suppliers to meet BISSELL requirements.
- Providing onsite audits using quality tools to define suppliers’ capabilities.
- Developing a list of needed improvements to meet BISSELL quality requirements.
- Partnering with Design Quality Engineers to ensure successful launches of new products.
- Manages quality databases by :
- Initiating actions for product improvements.
- Maintaining new and existing products and failures in the program.
- Reviewing data for identification of trends and process / product improvements for existing products.
- Assists in documenting quality procedures by :
- Identifying and helping with the creation of new procedures as required.
- Developing improvements to existing procedures that impact product quality.
- Communicating changes throughout the quality organization to ensure proper and consistent implementation.
- Investigates Nonconformances :
- Ability to fully investigate non-conformances using quality tools such as fishbone, 5 whys, or other methodologies to find root cause.
- Understanding the establishment of CAPA plans.
- Providing evidence that corrective actions are implemented and effective.
- Managing product quarantines resulting from quality issues.
- Working with suppliers to correct deficiencies identified.
- Identifying the extent and significance of the issue.
- Ensuring all affected product is quarantined.
- Determining whether current production or similar products are affected by the issue.
- Communicating to all affected departments the magnitude of the issue and when shipments can be expected to resume.
- Coordinating problem-solving teams to resolve issues, resume production / shipments, and implement corrective action.
- Creating work instructions for any rework needed to restore the product to saleable condition and providing them to the manager of the warehouse location.
- Assists in facility audits for quality certification programs, as required.
- Helps train new associates on quality principles.
- Understanding of test methods for analysis of incoming materials and blow molded products.
- Performing any other related duties as necessary.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / EDUCATION
- Degree minimum : Bachelor’s degree
- Specific concentration : Packaging, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or other Sciences.
- Experience level :
- Experience of at least 5 years in Quality Engineering.
- Experience in the Consumer Products Industry.
SPECIALIZED TRAINING / EDUCATION PREFERRED
- ASQ certifications (i.e. : CQE or CQM) or equivalent.
- Experience in the Consumer Products Industry.
- Understanding of Quality Management System requirements, such as ISO 9001 requirements.
- Six Sigma experience (green or black belt) / knowledge is a plus.
- Products testing laboratory experience.
- Proactive rather than reactive problem solution philosophy.
- Experience with supplier certification programs and plant audits.
- Good, self-motivated project management and time management skills.
SKILLS REQUIRED
- Diverse knowledge of manufacturing processes (i.e. : plastic molding, metal stampings, assembly, etc.).
- Good verbal & written communications skills.
- Good computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint or equivalent).
- Demonstrated team-building skills and leadership.
- Track record of continuous improvement initiatives.
- Willing and able to travel to domestic and international locations.
