Job Summary
The Library (https : / / library.gatech.edu / ) at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia invites applications for a an innovative and experienced professional to lead the staff in the Public Services Department.
The Public Services Librarian oversees a diverse and talented team (made up of 21 full-time professional staff members and 15 student assistants) who support and communicate library resources and services to customers and provide 24 / 7 in-person and virtual reference service, access service, and technology support.
Public Services plays a vital role for the library and the institution in providing access to library resources in support of student success, instructional support, research, and other public interests using a progressive service model.
This librarian supervises and works with department staff to implement the Library's strategic vision and guide the development and implementation of services and initiatives that respond to the evolving needs of students and faculty.
This position will serve as the day-to-day and operational lead for the Public Services department with 10 direct reports, including supervision of a Public Services Manager with 11 direct reports.
Position reports to the Assistant Dean for Interdisciplinary Initiatives. The Public Services Librarian must be committed to meeting the Georgia Tech community's unique need for innovative, cutting-edge, and collaborative solutions to its library and resource needs.
Worksite location is Atlanta, GA and hybrid.
This is a 12-month faculty position with an effort distribution of 80% librarianship, 10% scholarship, and 10% professional service to the library profession.
Up to two (2) years credit for previous professional experience may be given at the time of employment, in which case such credit will be stated in the offer letter.

This is not a remote position, but some teleworking hours is supported.
Responsibilities
80% Librarianship
- Plans, organizes, maintains and manages the day-to-day operations of the Public Services Department including circulation, stacks maintenance, reference, equipment loaning (Gadgets), reserves (including Course Reserves-Equipment), popular reading, multimedia recording studios, and customer support in a progressive 24 / 7 library service environment.
- Provide services to the GT community via service points (INFO Desk, phone / chat, ticketing) on a regular and as-needed basis.
- Provide direct supervision to 10 FTE staff employees. This includes supervision of a Public Services Manager with 11 FTE staff employees and 15 student workers.
- Manages budgets related to student hiring, equipment lending, professional development, and public services initiatives in collaboration with library leadership.
- In conjunction with departmental leadership, guides the Public Services department by setting departmental goals and assessing services and programs;
setting individual expectations and developing staff skills needed to deliver services; assessing staff development; and managing the day-to-day frontline service operations in person and virtually.
- Collaborates with Library Service Owners to develop, coordinate, and implement staff development workshops and other library related learning opportunities.
- Develop, communicate, document, and train staff on policies and procedures.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on public services process, policies, and workflows, and in support of the Library on projects, initiatives, committees, and more.
10% Scholarship and Creative Endeavors
According to expectations for library faculty members, contribute professionally through research, scholarship, and creative activities.
10% Service to the Library, Institute, and LIS Profession
- Foster positive relations with faculty, students, and staff and promote the Institute and Library's commitment to the Georgia Tech values.
- Serve on library and university committees as assigned.
- Contribute to the profession through service to professional organizations at the local, state, regional, and national levels, as appropriate.
Required Qualifications
This position vacancy will be filled at the rank of Librarian I.
Librarian / Archivist I. This is an entry-level rank. Individuals are not permitted to remain at this rank permanently. A Librarian / Archivist I must submit their dossier for promotion review, at the latest, by the end of their fourth year of service at Librarian / Archivist I rank at Georgia Tech Library.
Appointment to this rank requires an appropriate terminal degree, typically an American Library Association (ALA) - accredited master's degree, a degree in a subject related to archival work, and / or in the appropriate area of specialization.
Additional expertise and / or experience may be required for specific positions. Up to two (2) years credit for previous professional experience at this level may be given at the time of employment, in which case such credit must be stated in the offer letter.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in student-facing academic library services.
- Progressively responsible supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated commitment to developing a team through cultivating a culture of coaching, mentoring, and training.
- Knowledge of emerging trends in higher education and new developments in public services, particularly in innovations around student access, equipment lending, and affordability.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, facilitate internal communication, and coordinate efforts across library departments.
- Experience with Ex Libris Alma and Primo Systems.
- Demonstrated experience with project management, including planning, communication, and assessment.
- Instruction and / or training experience.
- The ability to promote a welcoming educational / work environment.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, analytical, written and oral communications skills.
Proposed Salary
This is a benefits-eligible position with a minimum salary of $67,498 commensurate with education and experience.
