Alabama State University, Academic Affairs / College of Education, Instructional Support Programs, invite application for the position of Chair / Associate or Full Professor of Curriculum & Instruction in the one of the following area : Early Childhood Education, Collaborative Education, Reading and Secondary Education.
The successful applicant will be responsible for developing a shared vision through collaborative leadership, sustaining a collegial environment, developing an appropriate curriculum, and implementing a culture of assessment.
The position will promote excellence in teaching, scholarship and service with emphasis on teaching and service. The Chair will will serve as a leader in the assessment cycle in the College of Education - Department of Curriculum and Instruction and lead faculty in writing and developing CAEP (Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation) and Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) continuous improvement in Educator Preparation reports as well as all institutional Research Assessment reports.
This is a 10-month tenure track position.
Responsibilities and Duties :
- Assist the Dean in formulating and administering instructional and curriculum policies
- Develop and revises courses, ensures that current course syllabi have been prepared, and incorporates methods for improving instruction.
- Transmit course objectives and departmental reports to the appropriate dean
- Promote the preparation of grant proposals to fund departmental programs and assist in administering grants awarded to support departmental programs
- Teach courses that do not exceed the maximum number of credit hours prescribed for academic departmental chairpersons
- Advise Curriculum and Instruction students
- Collaborate with faculty and COE administrators on the strategic planning
- Lead departmental recruitment
- Ensure that students majoring in the department's programs received proper academic advising
- Adhere to university policies and procedures
- Ensure key assessments are relevant to the objectives of the department and meet accreditation standards (CAEP and CIEP)
- Supervise the preparation of material about the department that is published in the university catalog
- Identify the need for new positions or replacements in the departmental faculty; recommend the appointment of persons to fill the vacancies
- Evaluate the performance of faculty members in the department and recommends their renewal, promotion, and / or tenure
- Prepare class schedules, make faculty assignments, and ensure an equitable distribution of faculty workload within the department
- Coordinate the development of student competencies that are relevant to the objectives of the department and the college of education
- Determine the need for departmental supplies, equipment, and library materials and ensure that these materials are obtained
- Prepare the departmental budget, in consultation with the dean of the college and university financial planners, and ensure that the approved budget is properly administered
- Support accreditation processes for assigned programs in the College of Education
- Work with faculty and other personnel to assure all accreditation, state, and national criteria concerning academics are enforced
- Perform other duties as assigned
A terminal degree from an accredited institution in a related field (Curriculum and Instruction, all cognates) within the College of Education, 2-3 years of experience in an administrative role in higher education (preferably as a department chair or program coordinator), K-12 setting experience or higher education as a teacher or administrator, experience as a director or coordinator in a closely related education field, and experience with national and state accreditation, working knowledge of CAEP, ALSDE and SACSCOC.
Must hold the rank of Associate or Full Professor or be eligible to the hold this rank based on experience in higher education.
Current College of Education faculty members who possess a doctorate in closely related fields (cognates / subjects areas in Curriculum and Instruction) are encourage to apply.
It is to be noted that for the purpose of continuous improvement of faculty qualifications as faulty members complete advanced degrees, certifications, licenses, etc.
the faculty member will send official documentation, within 45 days of hire, to the Office of Human Resources, and the credentialing file in Academic Affairs.
