Building Maintenance Technician

Job Duties :

The City of Virginia Beach Fire Department is hiring a dedicated individual to oversee facility and apparatus management within our dynamic team.

As a Facility and Apparatus Manager, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining our facilities and apparatus to the highest standards of safety, cleanliness, and functionality.

Facility Management :

• Ensure that a regular preventative maintenance program for facility and grounds is established and followed.
• Prioritize, schedule, and coordinate work and projects with city facilities staff and city contracted service providers in alignment with budget requirements.
• Maintain procedures and documentation (i.e. electronic forms, shared list document, email communication, etc.) for maintenance requests and completed work
• Participate in facility evaluations (OREs) to ensure facilities, custodial-work areas and apparatus storage areas are neat, organized and VIOSH compliant.
• Stay current on new products and supplies to maintain clean facilities with excellence.
• Maintain knowledge of employee utilized systems and train staff on use and maintenance as appropriate.
• Initiate interventions to solve maintenance related problems or issues in facilities.

Apparatus Management :

• Schedule and coordinate pump and aerial testing for emergency and reserve fleet.
• Coordinate with City Fleet Services and Departmental Apparatus teams to ensure vehicles and systems are tested, maintained, and operated as required by policies, procedures, and DOT guidelines.

General :

• Ensure all facilities and apparatus are regularly maintained.
• Maintain service contracts on all assigned equipment.
• Maintain asset inventory list and update as needed.
• Maintain files on all equipment with such information as user guides, warranty information, manual, purchase information, etc.
• Work closely with staff and other departments on all matters involving use of facilities and apparatus. Coordinate with staff to ensure the tasks are being performed up to standards, in proper priority, in a timely manner.
• Work closely with decision-makers to identify future needs and determine the best upgrade paths for equipment and infrastructure.

Other Representative Duties :

• Conduct research and analysis and compose reports requiring in-depth business knowledge of the division / department.
• Coordinate with internal and external contacts to gather and provide information for regularly recurring reports; and incorporate statistical and narrative information into reports, describing the data and its relationship to the division / department business.
• Adhere to City procurement requirements and policies when purchasing items and reviewing various payment vouchers.
• Provide a list of alternatives for management to use when making decisions.
• Coordinate preparation of the annual budget by coordinating and assembling the input from multiple budget codes or work units into a comprehensive packet;

and monitor execution of department / division budget advising manager of projected overages / shortages and recommend corrective action to remain within budgetary constraints.

• Provide input in the development of division or department goals and objectives so that agency-wide coordination toward accomplishing them may result.
• Serve as a division or department representative on committees or at meetings to exchange information on a citywide basis.

Minimum Requirements :

MINIMUMS : High school or GED plus four (4) years experience in the field of building construction and maintenance in such positions as facility maintenance;

or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and / or City-wide emergencies.

This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, safety vest, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protections, hard hat, steel toed shoes, fall protection or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk.

Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned. Position is a safety sensitive and subject to mandatory drug testing.

Positive drug test results may result in counseling and / or discipline, up to and including, termination.

Successful completion of a pre-employment physical.

Some positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the Citys operational status.

Preferences :

Experience using Word, Excel, and Outlook

4 years related experience in the field of building construction and maintenance in such positions as facility maintenance, project management, or building superintendent

2 years of contract management experience.

Experience with government procurement policies and procedures.

Experience managing work orders and projects in a work management system.

Experience in writing and presenting business reports.

Experience estimating job costs for budgeting purposes.

Proficiency and experience reviewing and interpreting building blue prints
