ANNUAL ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE : $60, - 75, (Salaries are paid biweekly)

Job Summary

The City of Fort Collins is seeking a Sr Inspector, Compliance to join our Traffic department to manage the work area traffic control permit program.

This is a full time, salaried position with the City with an anticipated hiring salary range of $60,000-$75,000 a year! The Sr Inspector, Compliance plays a pivotal role in ensuring compliance with applicable Federal, State, and industry laws, regulations, and standards, as well as approved City plans, standards, and safety guidelines.

Responsibilities will include overseeing inspections, permit review, and development of traffic control plans related to traffic management.

You will collaborate closely with traffic engineers, contractors, businesses, event staff, law enforcement, city staff, and other stakeholders to develop and implement work area traffic control to enhance public safety and optimizing traffic flow.

The ideal candidate will be a certified traffic control supervisor, and have 5 or more years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Responsible for the review, modification, approval and / or denial of all permits for Work Area Traffic Control.
  • Inspects work zones in the public Right of Way (ROW) for compliance with approved plans, City standards, and MUTCD.
  • Reviews traffic control plans and inspects work zones for compliance with safety standards to maintain safety for the traveling public, bicyclists, pedestrians, construction workers, and others.
  • Provides direction to work crews, including on the spot changes to address immediate issues.
  • Coordinates work zone planning, scheduling, and communication among City staff in various departments, contractors, utility companies, agencies, citizens and others as needed.
  • Coordinates with the DDA, homeowners’ associations, business associations, and other organizations to facilitate detours and traffic control plans.
  • Assures consistency and uniform application of the City’s WATC standards on all projects within the public ROW.
  • Interprets and enforces City procedures, policies, as well as national standards (MUTCD) and safety regulations, when appropriate.
  • Interfaces with various people utilizing work zones, investigates complaints and may require coordinating for traffic control plan adjustments or changes.
  • Supports Special Event permitting processes including planning, coordination, traffic control development, and review / approval of permits.
  • Supports Police Services coordinating traffic control plans for DUI checkpoints and other enforcement activities.
  • Provides technical support to design staff, other departments in planning and scheduling of work.
  • Coordinates construction project schedules to minimize construction impacts to the public.
  • Reviews oversize / overweight permits for conflicts with approved traffic control plans. Coordinates with City engineering and signal staff, permitees, and traffic control companies as necessary.
  • Occasionally provides flagger support for traffic control.
  • Coordinate with consultants and staff on projects to modify, change, or update permit applications.
  • May be required to establish and train staff, contractors, other departments on basics of Work Area Traffic Control and Flagging policies and procedures, project coordination, and the permitting process.

  • Knowledge of the City's transportation system.

  • Ability to remain current with construction and traffic industry best practices.
  • Ability to use word processing, data entry, computer-aided design, spreadsheets, and graphics, presentation software.
  • Basic math and statistical analysis skills.
  • Ability to prepare bid specifications.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret intersection and roadway design.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Preferred High School Diploma or GED and or functionally related licenses or certificates Associate's degree from an accredited college or technical school or two years formal training in Signing, Striping, Marking, Traffic Control

Experience Requirements

5 or more years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certifications / Licenses / Specialized Training

Current Class C driver's license, IMSA Level III Signs and Markings is desirable., Current American Traffic Safety Services Association Traffic Control Supervisor Certification.

CCA - Colorado Contractors Association Traffic Control Supervisor Certification may be accepted in lieu of ATSSA certification.

Current Flagger certification or the ability to acquire within six months of employment., HAZMAT management training certification desirable
